How to find product prices in seconds: Kmart customer reveals clever barcode ‘hack’

A Kmart shopper has revealed a little-known way to find product prices in seconds.

Tara Louise said there's no need to search the aisles for a price scanner. Instead, you can use the retailer's free app to find out how much unmarked items cost.

She explained that the app has a barcode scanning feature that allows users to know the product price and whether it has been discounted.

“So now you don't have to run around looking for a scanner to see how much something costs because they haven't put a price on it,” Tara said in a TikTok video.

Tara said the hack has made her shopping at Kmart 'even better'.

“It can be so frustrating when you want to know the price of something and there's no price tag or label on it, so I've found a really simple way to find out the price,” she added.

First she said to open the Kmart app and tap the barcode symbol in the top right corner next to the search bar.

This will open a camera that allows customers to scan barcodes. New users must first grant permission for the app to access their phone's camera.

“You find the product, look for the barcode, scan it and you immediately see what the product is and how much it costs,” says Tara.

She added that shoppers can add scanned items to their wishlist to save and purchase at a later time.

“Even if you find a product that has been reduced, you can scan the barcode and you will get not only the reduced price, but also the original price,” Tara said.

“You find the product, find the barcode, give it a scan and you immediately see what the product is and how much it costs,” Tara said.

“You find the product, find the barcode, give it a scan and you immediately see what the product is and how much it costs,” Tara said.

'Then you can see before checkout whether it has actually been reduced or whether it has simply been placed on the wrong table.'

The clever shopper's handy clip racked up more than 189,500 views and impressed hundreds of people.

“Oh you just saved me while I was looking for a prize machine, every time I came across something…awesome,” one woman replied.

“Seriously, so much easier than finding a scanner that doesn't work,” another agreed.

'You can also do this for Target, Big W, Bunnings, Coles and Woolies, and Bunnings will tell you the product path. The apps have been around for a while,” a third explained.

“Cotton On has this too (and sometimes things are cheaper online and the price matches),” a fourth added.

However, Kiwi viewers were disappointed to discover that Kmart in New Zealand doesn't have an app, with some users pointing out a flaw in Tara's trick.

“That only works if you can get a signal in Kmart, which I never can,” one customer wrote.

“What I learned is that it is a universal problem at all Kmarts that they never have signal,” a second commented.
