How to access Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC
Shadow of the Erdtreethe first major expansion for Elden Ring, sends you to a new region called the Land of Shadow. There, in a landmass roughly the size of the game’s Limgrave region, you’ll explore the Land of Shadow and follow in the footsteps of the Empyrean Miquella. But getting there can be tricky.
As with other FromSoftware games, you will have to play through parts of the game Elden Ring‘s story and explore the vast open world before gaining access the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. You can’t just select Shadow of the Erdtree from an in-game menu – you’ll have to do some work.

Where to find the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC
To get access Shadow of the Erdtree‘s new region, which you need access to Mohgwyn dynasty mausoleum in Mohgwyn Palace. You will have to do that too defeat Mohg, Lord of Bloodto gain unfettered access to Miquella’s Cocoon.
Mohgwyn Palace can only be reached via teleportation. There are two ways to get there:
- Complete part of White Mask Varré’s quest series around the Medal of Thoroughbred Knightwhich will grant you an audience with Mohg
- Travel to Sacred Snowfield in the northeastern region of the Lands Between, and use a Waygate to teleport to Mohgwyn Palace
Completing part of the White Mask Varré questline is probably the quicker path if you’re starting a new playthrough Elden Ring. But if you skipped parts of his questline and have access to all (or most) Elden Ring‘s places of mercy, you may just want to teleport to the Consecrated Snowfield or a nearby region.
Whatever the case, make sure you are well prepared for a fight with Mohg. He’s a badass demigod boss.
Below we have broken down the two main routes for reaching Mohgym Palace Elden Ring.
White Mask Varré route to Mohgwyn Palace
White Mask Varré is one of the first NPCs you encounter Elden Ring. He has a relatively simple questline that’s worth doing, but here are the basic steps you need to do to get an audience with Mohg through Varré:
- Meet Varré at the First Step site of grace and speak to him repeatedly until you exhaust his dialogue.
- Meet your girl, Melina, and travel to the Roundtable discussion.
- Loss Godrick the Grafted to acquire his Great Rune.
- Return to the roundtable and speak with Finger reader Enia.
- Varré travels from the First Step to Rose Church in the southwestern region of Lake Liurnia, west of Gate Town. Talk to Varré in the Rose Church and he will give you the Purulent bloody finger item
- Invade another world. You have two options to complete this step:
- Invade another player’s world with the Festering Bloody Finger three times. This requires an online multiplayer connection. Note: You do not need to successfully defeat the player(s) you invaded to progress in Varré’s quest.
- Invade the world of NPC Magnus the Beast Claw. His invasion mark can be found in Writheblood Ruins on the Altus Plateau. The nearest place of mercy is the Bridge of Iniquity. Defeat Magnus the Beast Claw to advance Varré’s quest.
- Talk to Varré again in the Rose Church and he will ask you to anoint yourself. Agree, and he will reward you with the Lord of Blood’s Favor item, and then asks you to soak it in a girl’s blood. There are four options to complete this step:
- Travel to Church of Inhibitionnorthwest of Frenzied Flame Village, and interact with the corpse there.
- Travel to Chapel of anticipation (the starting area), use an imbued sword key at the four belfries, and interact with the corpse there.
- Kill the NPC Irinaat the entrance to Weeping Peninsula (if she’s still alive).
- Kill the NPC Hyettawhich you can first encounter at the Mercy Place of the Lake-Facing Cliffs in Liurnia, once you complete Irina’s questline by completing Castle Morne and finding her father.
Once you have dyed the Lord of Blood’s Favor’s fabric with girl’s blood, return to Varré. He will perform a gruesome ritual on you and reward you with the Bloody finger. Talk to Varré again and he will give you the Medal of Thoroughbred Knight.
Use the Pureblood Knight’s Medal from the Tools tab in your inventory and you will be transported to the steps of Mohgwyn Palace, near the Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance site of grace.
Work your way through Mohgwyn Palace until you reach Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint. Your battle with Mohg, Lord of Blood, is close. If you’re having trouble, check out our guide on how to beat Mohg.
Sacred Snowfield Route to Mohgwyn Palace
To reach the sacred snowfield Elden Ringyou have to get a little further into the storyline and the Haligtree secret locket. That medallion is divided into two halves:
Haligtree secret locket (right) is found in the southern part of Liurnia of the Lakes in the Village of the Albinaurians. To reach the Village of the Albinaruics, start from the Folly on the lake place of grace and head south through the shady, swampy area full of giant crabs. Go up the slope on the other side and you will reach the village.
There you will find a lonely, striking urn. Hit it to reveal the village’s sole survivor, Albus. He will give you the right half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion.

Haligtree secret locket (left) is found inside Castle Sol in the Mountain peaks of the giants region. You must defeat Commander Niall to gain access to the left half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion.
Once you have both halves, travel to the Big Lift from Rold in Leyndell, Royal Capital — a location you can only access once you acquire it two Great Runes. At the Great Lift of Rold, select “Hoist Secret Medallion” (not “Hoist Medallion”) to gain access to the sacred snowfield.
The Waygate that teleports you to Mohgwyn Palace is located on the western edge of Consecrated Snowfield, northwest of Yellow Anix Ruins and west of where you’ll be invaded by (and must defeat) Sanguine Noble. If you teleport to the Inner sacred snowfield place of graceJust head west to find the Waygate.

The Waygate in Consecrated Snowfield takes you to a dark cave, the exit of which leads into Mohgwyn Palace. You must make your way northwest through the blood lake, avoiding Nameless White Mask invaders and giant spectral skeletons to reach the Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance site of grace.
