If you notice that your vision is deteriorating quickly, experts say this may be due to the glasses you are wearing.
There are a few possible reasons for this, say ophthalmologists from Britain and Australia.
First, when you alternate between wearing glasses and taking them off, your pre-corrected vision may appear to have decreased.
However, this is simply because you have become accustomed to good vision – and it will suddenly become more noticeable if you have trouble seeing.
“Once we get used to seeing clearly, our tolerance for blurred vision will be lower and we will turn to glasses to see clearly again,” wrote James Armitage, Associate Professor in Vision Science and Nick Hockley, eye health expert – both from Deakin University in Australia.
The second reason is that it is very likely that you are carrying the wrong prescription, Armitage wrote for the conversation.
This includes carrying prescriptions that are too weak or too strong – which some studies suggest could be the case for 72 million Americans.
Many people believe that wearing glasses worsens your eyesight, but this may be due to a psychological trick
This can cause your vision to deteriorate over time. A controversial study from 2004 showed this as much 19 percent of children could be unnecessarily prescribed glasses.
History has shown this riddle, Doctors used to prescribe it children with poor distance vision, also known as myopia, received weaker prescriptions than they really needed.
The theory was that this would prevent their eyes from becoming dependent on glasses, and would help them avoid further vision problems in the future.
But a series The groundbreaking studies in the early 2000s found these recommendations to be misleading, as it revealed that students who carried weaker prescriptions than they needed developed poorer vision than students with the correct ones.
But if people wear the right prescription, their vision does not get worse, studies show. And the benefits of optimal vision are unprecedented.
A recent study found that giving workers in Bangladesh reading glasses was associated with a 33 percent increase in their income.
This is consistent with previous findings, such as a 2018 study which showed that giving glasses to tea pickers in India resulted in a 31 percent increase in productivity.
“It is a myth that wearing glasses can weaken your eyes, and it is potentially harmful to claim that people prescribed glasses or contact lenses do not need them,” Roshni Kanabar, clinical advisor at the Association of Optometrists previously told the Daily Mail. Mail.
Experts say regular eye exams are crucial for eye health
After a while, everyone’s vision gets worse with age, Armitage and Hockley wrote. But this is not worse for glasses wearers, they wrote.
Instead, the flexible lenses in our eyes that control vision stiffen as we age, resulting in problems with near vision, known as presbyopia.
There is no treatment for this condition other than correcting vision with glasses.
The researchers recommend annual eye exams to stay on top of the condition and keep your eyes in the best shape possible.
