How the ‘Cookers’, conspiracy theorists, and Sovereign Citizens are marking Australia Day

They may not believe in the Australian government, but conspiracy theorists and members of the ‘Sovereign Citizen’ movement have flooded social media with videos broadcasting their messages and a rally cry to rally on Australia Day.

Waving flags, singing songs and hymns and chanting slogans, groups often derogatorily known as ‘cooks’ have flooded online sites with messages and statements about their beliefs.

Compiled on Twitter pages, the videos are a window into the world of alternative thinkers who oppose being bound by Australian law.

In one clip, a man with a loud megaphone drives with friends in a car belting out a slightly slurred invitation for all Australians to gather in Canberra on Australia Day to protest.

Driving by people who are completely ignorant of him, the man shouts: ‘We the free people of Australia are going to treat everyone to a day of great events, barbecues and actually expressing our feelings for our great country of Australia.

In a ‘kitchen’ video, a man with a loud megaphone drives around with friends in a car singing a slightly slurred invitation for all Australians to gather in Canberra on Australia Day.

‘We would love to see all the people from Canberra. We need all Australians now to be one and move forward as this beautiful nation that we are.

“There will be music and barbecues and a lot of good things.”

Conspiracy theory group Unite in White chants and holds signs reading ‘expose 28’, a reference to an outdated theory once espoused by former liberal senator Bill Heffernan that a purported list of 28 pedophiles who were ‘prominent’ citizens of the country.

In one of several videos, some 12 sovereign citizens gathered in the Victorian border town of Wodonga to present a letter at the town’s military barracks.

The man who wrote the letter addressed several men with long beards, quoted Martin Luther King, and laid out his theory about what the Australian government was currently doing.

“You know, whenever Pharaoh wanted to prolong the period of ‘slavery’ in Egypt, he had a favorite formula,” he said,

“He kept the slaves fighting and that’s what our government is doing now: keep us all fighting and keep us all divided.”

In another video, a young woman gives a whiteboard lesson on what sovereign citizens should do when arrested by the police.

The Unite For White rally in Wodonga drew about 12 people who heard about Martin Luther King and the Egyptian pharaohs.

On the board, the word ‘sovereign’ is written ‘sovrign’. The woman says when ‘if a police officer stops you and says ‘can you show me your license’, you say ‘happy to answer your question if you answer my question first’.

‘Immediately, you are changing from the public to the private, you are becoming the creditor, not the debtor.

“That leads us to interrogate ourselves and (then) we say ‘I’m a living woman’ or a man and the police officers are going to say ‘show me your license’ and you’ll say ‘I’m a living woman’, okay.”

‘And the police say ‘give me your license’ and you say ‘I’m a living woman’ and if you ask three times and they haven’t given you an answer and they’re silent, they’ve actually implied consent.

‘So they consenting, yes, you are a living woman, it takes you out of their jurisdiction.’

A ‘SovCit’ teacher, who was recently pulled over by police because she had ‘sovereign license plates’ on her car, posted a video complaining that ‘you just can’t talk to the police’.

So I had to change my license plates. You can’t talk to the police. They don’t give a shit.

Daniel Vincent’s friends pray that Australians be with him “and all the tired, tired angels…if they care that hundreds of children disappear in this country every week.”

Mr. Vincent has posted several videos of himself and other supporters standing on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra singing and waving flags and singing ‘Amazing Grace’ and other songs and hymns.

He also yells and yells and the group laughs and claps as his voice echoes off the lake shore.
