How Sting stays in such incredible shape at age 71

Aging gracefully in the public eye is no small feat, but with every breath he takes and every step he takes, Sting continues to defy the years.

The 71-year-old police frontman showed off his fit physique when he took the stage in Scarborough last weekend as part of his world tour, leaving many fans wondering what the singer does to stay in shape.

Dressed in a tight gray T-shirt that revealed buff arms and rock-hard abs and white jeans, the silver-haired Roxanne singer looked as confident as ever, with barely any crow’s feet visible around his icy blue eyes.

This Englishman relies on a range of trusted methods to defy the test of time, including a low-sugar macrobiotic diet and yoga to keep his body in shade.

Here, Femail takes a look at everything the singer does to keep the magic going in his 70s.

Macrobiotic diet

Sting has credited his amazing shape to his macrobiotic diet, which consists of lots of vegetables and grains, and focuses on avoiding toxins and processed foods that contain preservatives.

The diet also revolves around low meat, dairy and sugar consumption.

Sting and his wife Trudie Styler moved their family to Lake House Farm in Wiltshire in 1991, where they followed a subsistence diet and have grown organic vegetables ever since.

The singer’s family has a herd of free-range chickens, its own trout lake and even beehives for honey.

In her 1999 book The Lake House Cookbook, Styler wrote, “I decided that I would only be satisfied if I knew exactly what we were putting on our plate.”

She also revealed that the pair enjoy a mindful approach to food and believe that the way we “treat our own bodies is an extension of the way we treat the planet.”

The singer is so committed to his diet that he reportedly has his own personal chef with him to keep it going while he’s away from home.

This commitment to a healthy diet doesn’t stop the Message in a Bottle singer from indulging in a drink or two and the occasional ice cream.

In 2003 he told The protector: ‘I drink alcohol. I don’t smoke anything legal. I drink coffee. I like chocolate and ice cream. But otherwise I’m very healthy.’

Yoga

Sting is known for his love of yoga, which he has been doing for over three decades.

He admitted in an interview with his yoga instructor when he was 43 that he came to yoga late in life, aged 38-39.

According to a transcript of the interview shared on White’s White Lotus retreat website, the singer revealed that he had tried other fitness regimens before trying yoga.

“I’ve been through several fitness regimens, you know. I ran about five miles a day and did aerobics for a while.

‘I’ve always stayed fit because I’m an artist and all those things help me to perform.

“But it wasn’t until I met Danny Paradise, who became my mentor in yoga, that I started the practice that I think will be for the rest of my life,” he added.

When he turned 60, he told Energy Times, “I perform on stage in much the same way I did when I was in my twenties or teens, and I do it just as efficiently.

“Two decades of yoga have given me two extra decades of this career. I couldn’t do it if I wasn’t in shape,” he added.

The singer is dedicated to the practice and has been known to do his yoga even when he is on tour.

In 2021, while on Lorraine Kelly’s ITV show, he joked that his good looks were down to “vanity and a little discipline,” before adding, “I studied yoga for 30 years. But after a while everything becomes yoga.’

Besides yoga, the singer also revealed that he “swims every day, I like walking and I sing.”

Tantric sex

Sting and Trudie have been together since 1982 and the couple share the same passion for healthy living.

They are also known to practice tantric sex, having once made a throwaway comment about seven-hour steamy sessions with his partner in the 1990s.

In the 2003 Guardian interview, the singer scoffed when asked if he had any advice for people considering trying tantric sex themselves. adding ‘it’s not f****** before eight o’clock.’

However, Sting gave more details about his tantric bond with his wife, whom he calls his “church,” adding that sex was just the surface of a deep meaningful relationship.

Trudie and Sting, who have four children together, were married in 1992.

He added that the practice of tantra was about how you connect with your partner, which can happen at different times during the day, from the way you look at them to giving them a bath or a massage.

In 2014, he further clarified his comments during an interview for the Bravo series Inside The Actor’s Studio.

“The idea of tantric sex is a spiritual act. I know of no purer and better way to express love for another individual than to share that beautiful, I call, “sacrament.” I would stay with it. Not seven o’clock, but the idea.’

He then joked, “Seven hours including movie and dinner,” which made the audience laugh.
