An enterprising Airbnb host has created a unique tribute to the film The Castle by turning the 'vacation home' used in the film into a getaway destination.

Located in Bonnie Doon, 168km from Melbourne, the modest three-bedroom cottage has been renovated to look exactly as it did in the 1997 film.

Highlights include retro furniture and accessories reminiscent of the '70s atmosphere in the now famous Australian comedy classic.

Fans will remember that it was in Bonnie Doon where the film's main characters – a family called the Kerrigan's – enjoyed a bush holiday because they wanted to experience 'the serenity'.

Interviewed by the Herald Sun On Monday, the current owner, known as Mel, said she bought the property in 2015.

She then spent eight months furnishing it in a style that followers of the film would appreciate, including a kennel for Kerrigan's 'dog' Coco.

It is now available for six guests for a minimum of $120 per night.

“I thought, 'What would the Kerrigan family have in their holiday home?' and I let out the 'Sal' (played in Anne Tenney's film),” she said.

“One thing to add is that most of the furniture I bought was second hand.”

The fun outing has many more nods to the original film, including a sign on the front lawn that reads “Serenity.”

There is also a set of jousting sticks prominently displayed at the front of the house – another reference to the film.

According to the Airbnb website, the property also features a granny flat for three people, called 'The Poolroom' – another nod to one of the film's famous taglines.

Originally released in 1997, The Castle is a comedy about a working-class family battling developers.

Starring Michael Caton, Anne Tenney, Stephen Curry, Sophie Lee, Eric Bana and Charles 'Bud' Tingwell, the ultra-low budget film grossed $11 million at the Australian box office.

The film's creators Rob Sitch, Santo Cilauro, Tom Gleisner and Jane Kennedy later made another comedy classic The Dish in 2000.
