How President Joe Biden is set to do LESS work in his new role – with vacations and plans to be a ‘surrogate’ for Kamala Harris

The White House has been silent for three weeks about plans to “recalibrate” the president’s activities, but Joe Biden’s new role as occasional campaign manager, shopper and beachgoer is already clearly visible in his activities.

Biden on Sunday gave his first detailed comments on what he sees as his role in the 2024 campaign now that he is no longer the nominee.

It appears he will have a limited political role and therefore remain relatively close to home, while Vice President Kamala Harris is tasked with whipping up screaming crowds across the country.

Asked if people would see him around the country during the campaign for the November election, Biden, 81, replied in a new interview: “Yes, definitely.”

He spoke about his role as an adviser to Harris, whose chosen role is to advise him. “I talk to her often,” he told CBS, adding that she has known her new running mate Tim Walz “for decades” and thinks he’s a “great guy.”

This comes after White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre described Biden’s participation in the selection process for Vice President Harris when asked directly by DailyMail.com whether he had given her a recommendation.

“The vice president asked the president for advice, and — and you know, she certainly welcomed it — the vice president welcomed his advice,” she said, calling the pair “critical partners.”

The White House has sought time to “recalibrate” President Biden’s role. He spoke of “putting together a campaign tour in Pennsylvania.” He rode his bike near the beach on Sunday

“But she asked for his advice. He gave the advice. She welcomed the advice. And I’ll leave it at that,” she said.

Biden also hinted at a “campaign tour” of Pennsylvania, a state he has been closely watching and where he trailed Donald Trump in the polls before withdrawing.

“I spoke to Governor Shapiro, who is a friend. We have to win Pennsylvania, my original home state. He and I are putting together a campaign tour in Pennsylvania. I’m going to campaign in other states as well. And I’m going to do what Kamala thinks I can do to help the most,” he said.

This effort has not yet been announced by Harris’ campaign.

Biden’s first meeting with Harris will take place in Maryland, a predominantly Democratic state that borders Washington, D.C. It is being billed as an official event, rather than a campaign event.

The VP wants Biden in “targeted places where he has the most strength,” Politico reported last week. That includes older white voters in states where he won. “It’s very hard to see the Harris team wanting him on the trail” after the party pushed him out, an aide told the publication.

There are early indications that the Harris camp believes Biden can help by laying low and allowing her to build her own brand. Her favorability rating rose 10 points in Pennsylvania compared to a month ago in a new New York Times/Siena poll. Her favorability rating reached 51 percent among likely Pennsylvania voters in the poll.

In a separate Hill/Emerson poll in the state in late July, the Scranton-born Biden took 37 percent.

There are reports that Biden will appear at the Democratic Convention in Chicago for one day — his first — and then leave the stage for other Democratic luminaries. The Clintons, Obamas and members of the Harris inner circle are expected to be the big draws at the event. It is unclear what role he might play in raising funds for the party.

Biden repeated his refrain, “Watch,” in response to questions about his health. “Look, I had a very, very bad day in that debate because I was sick. But I don’t have a serious problem,” he said in his sit-down.

One thing Biden shows no signs of giving up is getting out of D.C. for the weekend. He flew to his home state on Thursday, thanked campaign staff, and then headed to his beach house in Delaware.

During his outing, he went on a bike ride and spent some time on the beach with his wife Jill and granddaughter Naomi.

It’s not all gamble for Biden, as the White House showed last week when the president announced a sweeping, multi-country prisoner swap with Russia that would bring Americans home.

Biden was joined by Harris as he welcomed them to Joint Base Andrews. The president continues to push for a ceasefire deal in Gaza, which could benefit Harris more than any campaign appearance if it were to happen. He signed a joint letter with the leaders of Egypt and Qatar on Thursday saying there was “no time to lose.”

He briefly warned Iran when asked about a feared attack on Israel by vassals. “Don’t do it,” was his curt reply to a question.

He was asked about Gaza, and Donald Trump’s claim that he was angry about being pushed out, during his Sunday bike ride. The president smiled and waved as he rode past.
