The 30-year-old’s new defense team had argued that the convictions for the three crimes brought against him in December were a “miscarriage of justice,” that prosecutors had “painted Lanez as a career criminal with guns,” and that his trial attorney was ‘ineffective’.

But on May 9, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Herriford denied the motion for a new trial.

“Even if mistakes had been made during the process… they were minor mistakes and there would have been no different outcome,” he said.

The judge also dismissed the accusation from the singer’s new defense team that his lead lawyer at the trial, George Mgdesyan, had poorly defended his Lanez.

‘Mr. Mgdesyan presented a very strong and robust defense of his client,” Judge Herriford said.

Lanez’s Florida-based attorney, Jose Baez, sought to prevent Judge Herriford from issuing his denial of a new trial by filing a motion to disqualify the judge from the case.

“We object to the court’s ruling,” Baez said. “It is our request to suspend the proceedings (the ruling on the retrial) until the disqualification is resolved.”

But the judge denied his request, telling the court that nothing in California statutes prevented him from ruling Tuesday and later handling the motion of disqualification.

He noted that if he were later disqualified from the case, his ruling Tuesday to deny the motion for a new trial would become invalid.

After Lanez’s attorney, Barthoma, filed a formal objection to Judge Herriford’s rejection of the motion for a new trial, the judge rejected the defense’s motion to disqualify him from the case as “untimely.”

The judge has scheduled Lanez’s sentencing for June 13.
