How Julia Fox has ‘reinvented’ the Canadian tuxedo

Julia Fox has become synonymous with the Canadian tuxedo after ‘reinventing’ the double jean look with her daring DIY ensembles.

Earlier this week, the 33-year-old model/actress sported a characteristically daring design at a New York Fashion Week dinner.

She went out in a Backless asymmetrical mini dress made with recycled denim waistbands, and completed the look with a denim puff, boots, and clutch.

But it’s not the first time she’s flaunted her denim wardrobe, and her constant reshaping of the humble jean seems to be spearheading a broader resurgence.

Here, stylist from New York Liz Teich tells FEMAIL how Fox’s signature style is ‘one of the hottest trends for 2023’ and how the everyday wearer can recreate it.

The model’s constant reshaping of the humble jean seems to be spearheading a broader resurgence.

The mother-of-one has experimented with the denim-on-denim look with acid washed, black washed, and white washed jeans.

In the early 2000s, the Canadian tuxedo, defined as wearing double jean, was ubiquitous with a host of A-list celebrities making the bold fashion move.

Most famously, at the American Music Awards in 2001, Britney Spears arrived in a Kurt and Bart denim patchwork dress alongside Justin Timberlake, who had opted for a light wash ensemble finished off with a denim cowboy hat.

But the popularity of the distinctive look was short-lived and soon faded.

Liz Teich, who runs The New York Stylist and regularly shares fashion inspiration with her 110,000 Instagram followers, has been a professional commercial stylist for 15 years.

The fashion guru, who has styled Tom Brady, Ashley Graham and Mike Tyson, told FEMAIL why the Canadian tuxedo disappeared.

She said: “I think society started to reject the denim overload look after seeing it done in such a cheesy way, especially as we saw in the famous Britney/Justin moment and replicated in costumes and parodies.”

“After the last few years in hoodies and activewear, everyone seems to be excited about denim again, so it’s only natural that designers are revisiting it in a more stylish way.”

And Fox seems to be at the forefront of this wave, making it his personal crusade to bring the look back into style.

At the 2001 American Music Awards, Britney Spears wore a Kurt and Bart denim patchwork dress and Justin Timberlake opted for a light wash ensemble with a denim cowboy hat.

In one of her most striking ensembles, the Uncut Gems star stepped out in Calvin Klein underwear, a denim blazer, denim boots and a repurposed denim tote.

The popularity of the distinctive Canadian tuxedo style apparently waned until Fox made it his personal crusade to bring it back into style.

In one of her most striking ensembles, the Uncut Gems star went “grocery shopping” wearing Calvin Klein underwear, a denim blazer, jean boots and a repurposed jean bag.

And, in another high-profile appearance, Fox attended Kenzo’s show at Paris Fashion Week alongside his now-ex Kanye West.

The actress rocked a jean ensemble that flaunted tapered bust details, and with her ex-boyfriend also donning a matching jean ensemble, many said so. he remembered the moment of Spears and Timberlake.

But far from saving her handmade denim tricks to herself, Fox has previously shared tutorials on her Instagram page on how to recreate some of her most achievable looks.

The star uploaded a video to Instagram, which has been viewed over a million times, about creating a pair of low-rise jean pants and repurposing the waistband as a bandeau.

And, shortly after going public with the now-ex Kanye West, the couple attended Kenzo’s show at Paris Fashion Week in all-denim mix-and-match outfits.

Speaking about the star’s denim ensembles, Liz told FEMAIL: “I have to give her credit for showing how creative it can be to take an old piece of clothing and reinvent it in new ways, which is something I personally love showing off to my clients rather than to buy a whole new wardrobe.

“Although most can’t wear it, the fact that he’s made an entire outfit out of a pair of jeans is pretty impressive and a sustainable way to update a basic look.

“Of course, for the average person, this is a great inspiration to make denim your own.”

That being said, many everyday users who want to challenge the Canadian tuxedo may not know where to start.

But Liz said the answer might be easier than you think.

The stylist revealed: “I’ve been showing my clients to take the old basic chambray top from their closet and pair it with their favorite jeans for a surprisingly refreshing look.

‘You can layer a turtleneck underneath for this season to give it depth and some intentional sparkle.

“I have also loved combining a denim jacket and jean.

‘The trick is to keep the denim pieces almost or exactly the same in wash or contrast, but you can get creative with that too!’
