How Joe Biden’s fury at being ‘overthrown’ by Kamala Harris now threatens to derail his VP’s campaign
President Joe Biden’s relationship with his No. 2 has deteriorated since she replaced him as the top man on the Democrat presidential ticket in 2024.
Vice President Kamala Harris’ team has faced rising tensions with Biden’s staff, which includes nearly a dozen people familiar with the situation detailed to Axios in a new report.
While aides say Biden and his team want Harris to win in November, many are left bruised by the president being pushed out of his re-election bid.
“They’re too wrapped up in their feelings,” a Harris ally said of Biden’s team.
Public conflict has flared in recent weeks, with some actions raising eyebrows about the tension between the president and his vice president.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have a growing rift after she replaced her boss in the 2024 election
For example, Biden made a surprise appearance in the White House press conference room for the first time on Friday – while Harris was preparing for a campaign event in Michigan.
This caused the VP’s event to receive less TV time and attention than it otherwise would have.
Even Republican former President Donald Trump sees the rift in the White House.
“He can’t stand her for one simple reason: she toppled him,” Trump said of Biden and Harris’ relationship.
“But she didn’t do it, the party did it,” he told Fox News host Maria Bartimo on Sunday. ‘It really was a coup. I mean, he’s a very angry man. I think he looks better now because we’re comparing him to her now.’
Some Harris aides say White House staffers are deliberately not working with Biden’s messaging and schedule to tailor it to what would best benefit the candidate’s 2024 campaign, according to the Axios report.
“The White House lacks someone in the room who is thinking first and foremost about the consequences for the campaign,” said a member of Harris’s campaign.
Last week, Harris criticized Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for refusing to answer her calls about hurricane relief efforts and blasted him for calling her relief efforts “politically motivated.”
Even former President Donald Trump says he can see how angry Biden is that he was forced out of his re-election bid
Soon after, Biden praised the Republican governor for being “gracious” and “cooperative” during their calls.
Frustrations are also mounting as Harris’ team tries to handle the increased workload, but the White House staff is struggling to get people hired.
A White House official told Axios: “Everyone from the president on down knows how important the election is, and we have always expected that some staffers would want to move to the campaign for the latter part of the administration. ‘
Biden faced intense pressure from his party to abandon his re-election campaign after his disastrous debate performance against Trump in June.
For about a month, the president kept up the pressure, claiming he planned to keep it up until November.
But on July 21, Biden announced on X that he was ending his bid and endorsed his No. 2 to take over the campaign.
