Manchester United may have made a successful start to the Premier League season with a 1-0 win over Fulham, but Alejandro Garnacho may still have a sleepless night after the match.

The Red Devils took the three points with a late winner from newcomer Joshua Zirkee at Old Trafford.

Yet they should have made it 2-0 in injury time when Marcus Rashford made up for a defensive error and headed straight for goal.

The Englishman was unselfish and played the ball to Garnacho, who somehow managed to tip the ball wide with an empty net in front of him.

And fans couldn’t believe their eyes when someone on X posted a message: ‘HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE’.

Another joked about it and wrote: ‘Even grandpa scored that one’.

Others claimed Rashford was partly to blame for playing the ball slightly behind the Argentine, with one even saying the pass was ‘not great’.

One viewer summed it up by posting: ‘The Bassey clearance, the Rashford pass, the Garnacho finish. Possibly the worst sequence of play this sport has ever seen.’

Most of the attention, however, was on Garnacho and one man made sure to comfort him after the final whistle.

Assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy walked straight up to the 20-year-old, put his arm around him and told him to keep his head up.

After the match, manager Erik ten Hag criticized his team’s wastefulness.

“I think there’s one area we need to get right: how to kill (games) in the box,” Ten Hag told reporters. “We saw it in the friendlies and last week against (Manchester) City (in United’s Community Shield loss).

‘We created enough chances and shouldn’t have waited for a late winner. We need to be more calm and kill teams.

‘Maybe it’s because it’s the start of the season, players have to be at full speed. We have enough players with scoring ability.’
