Aussie slashes $36 off fuel bill by using Qantas Frequent Flyer points: ‘Best save ever’

One savvy shopper shared how he managed to save $36 on gas when he filled up his tank.

The man used almost 7,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer points he had collected to reduce his fuel bill from $60 to just $23.67.

Qantas Points can be both earned and redeemed when members use a participating BP fuel station.

The Queensland driver was happy with the discount, calling it the ‘best save ever’, which impressed other Australian budgeters.

“I only had to pay $23.67 for gas this morning. “I scanned my Qantas card and saw I could redeem a stack of points for a fuel discount,” he said in a message from Markdown addicts Australia.

‘Talk about the biggest fuel savings EVER!’

Qantas members can use their Frequent Flyer points at participating fuel stations to get discounts on fuel and eligible items such as snacks and drinks.

The discount can be redeemed by members when they scan their Qantas card at BP, select the option to pay with points when prompted and enter the four-digit rewards code found in the Qantas app.

By downloading the BPme app, Qantas members can link their Frequent flyer account to earn two points per liter of BP Ultimate Unleaded 98 fuel purchased and one point for $1 spent on eligible in-store purchases.

Group members were impressed by the man’s rescue hack.

‘I do this a lot. I have Commonwealth points and am converting them into gift cards. Same with Telstra points. I mean, if you can’t afford a vacation, you might as well use it when you need it!’ said a woman.

‘Well done, great save. Use your points however you want. It’s your points,” a second replied, and a third said: “Well done, I say.”

However, not everyone thought the hack was of good value.

‘Glad you enjoyed the savings, but in perspective 6,000 Qantas points are enough for a one-way ticket from Melbourne to Sydney, worth about $130. Points are much better spent on flights than on petrol, toasters etc. someone explained.

“Not much of a savings if you spent enough points for an interstate ride,” another noted.

The Qantas member hit back, saying he wasn’t planning on flying anywhere anytime soon, so he jumped at the chance to save a penny on fuel.

“I took the opportunity to save and I don’t regret it for a moment. This economy is absolutely wild and expensive. “I’m doing everything I can to stay afloat and stay alive,” he said.

‘I can’t afford a holiday, this was the best discount I’ve ever had.’
