  • Kiwi International feared his contract would be torn up

Brandon Smith has revealed how he plans to regain the respect of his Roosters teammates and NRL coach Trent Robinson after the hooker received an infringement notice for missing a recent team meeting.

Smith, 28, also confirmed he was battling some mental demons as he dealt with the fallout after the shock 18-16 defeat to the Cowboys at Allianz Stadium on June 2.

‘It [breach] notify me,” Smith shared The Bye Round podcast with James Graham.

“I feel like I’m letting people down, and I don’t like letting people down.

‘It has certainly made me focus on what is really important. Obviously I was violated for missing the meeting.

It remains to be seen whether Roosters coach Trent Robinson will name Smith to face the Eels in Round 15 NRL action

“First of all, it was stupid of me. I went for coffee with my wife… and she doesn’t like it when I take out my phone because I’m ignoring her.

‘So I left my phone at home. The reason it’s my fault is because [as a player] you check the schedule before going to sleep.

“I missed the meeting, that was the problem.”

The Kiwi international also told Graham he feared the Tricolors would sack him.

‘It’s been an epic few days. Luckily it was all good,” he said.

“The boys were funny and made fun of me.”

Smith’s candid insight comes as teammate Luke Keary said missing a team meeting is ‘not good enough’.

“It’s kind of black and white,” he said. ‘But things like that happen sometimes.

‘People sleep in or something happens. It wasn’t good enough. We handled it internally and we want to keep it that way.

“There are some norms here that have been around this joint for a long time. A lot of those older guys have put those standards in place. We all adhere to it.

“Brandon is no different. If you don’t comply, you will be punished.’
