While his darkly comedic portrayal of the flawed superhero Deadpool in the 2016 and 2018 films of the same name has made him one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors, it’s Ryan’s off-screen ventures – not least his £2 million purchase of nun -league Welsh football team Wrexham in 2020 — which are getting more and more attention.
Joining forces with actor Rob McElhenney, the pair’s purchase of the club and journey to promotion appeared in a Disney+ series titled Welcome to Wrexham.
It was a purchase that paid off as Wrexham finally earned promotion back to the Football League last month, much to the delight of its fans.
It has since been announced that Ryan and Rob plan to take the team on a pre-season tour of the US, with friendlies against major clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United and MLS reserve side LA Galaxy II.
The celebrity owners will also reportedly fly the team to Las Vegas as a reward for winning the National League with a record 111 points.
It has also been reported that Ryan is about to take over another sports team after celebrating promotion with the former National League outfit.
He is now embarking on a venture where he will lead a group that will submit a £795 million bid to buy National Hockey League’s Ottawa Senators, according to the Ottawa sun.
This isn’t to say that Ryan hasn’t cashed in on his massive acting success too, earning an extra £18 million in box office earnings after paying £2 million upfront for Deadpool in 2016.
Good deal: In 2020, Reynolds made millions when Aviation American Gin, a craft spirit company he co-owned, was snapped up by British drinks giant Diageo
Good luck! He and Rob McElhenney also bought non-league club Wrexham FC in 2020, and last month the team earned promotion back to the Football League.
For the sequel two years later, his production partner’s involvement meant he reportedly earned £32.2 million from the film alone.
Earlier this month, Reynolds’ investment in Mint Mobile, a budget phone company, netted him £245 million when communications giant T-Mobile announced it was buying the company for more than £1 billion.
Given that the couple – who have four young children – were previously valued at £147 million, that means they nearly doubled their fortune overnight with a single investment.
In 2020, he made millions when Aviation American Gin, a craft spirits company he co-owned and was the public face for, was snapped up by UK drinks giant Diageo in a deal that involved a £272 million upfront payment , but could eventually be worth £495 million.
Reynolds, who was believed to own 20 to 25 percent of the company, remains involved with the company.
Ryan also invests in Canadian wealth management service Wealthsimple – worth £4.1bn – and has partnered with Canadian password management software company 1Password, which is worth £5.5bn.
He has found a suitable partner in Blake, who has also shown an entrepreneurial side by launching Betty Buzz, a range of non-alcoholic sparkling drinks.
