How Anthony Albanese is raking in more than $100,000 a year by renting out his two homes

Anthony Albanese is raising $104,520 a year renting out his two Sydney homes while living rent-free at the taxpayer-funded Lodge.

The Prime Minister finalized a deal in November to rent his three-bedroom former federation house in Marrickville, six days after listing it for $1,350 a week.

And along with his second rental home in nearby Dulwich Hill, which brought him $880 a week in 2018 but fell by a quarter when the pandemic hit, he now makes $104,520 a year in rental income alone.

That’s on top of their Prime Minister’s salary of $564,356, bringing their combined income to $668,876 a year.

Anthony Albanese (pictured with his son Nathan and partner Jodie Haydon) is cashing in on the housing crisis, renting out his former home in inner-city Sydney for hundreds of dollars more than similar rental properties nearby.

The Prime Minister finalized a deal in November to rent his three-bedroom former federation house in Marrickville, six days after listing it for $1,350 a week.

Mr Albanese moved full-time into the Prime Minister’s official residences at Kirribilli House in Sydney and The Lodge in Canberra after his election victory last May.

He was photographed in his pajamas outside his Marrickville home, which he shared with his 22-year-old son Nathan, the morning after his win.

Albanese bought the house with his ex-wife, former NSW Deputy Premier Carmel Tebbutt, for $997,500 in 2006.

It was put up for rent through an eastern suburbs real estate company, The Agency Property Management, based in Bondi Junction and sold in a matter of days.

Former Prime Minister Scott Morrison allowed his pool cleaner Nikki Durrant to live in his Port Hacking home in south Sydney after her house was destroyed by flooding.

Malcolm Turnbull rejected official residences to stay in his luxurious mansion in Point Piper. It is understood that Tony Abbott and John Howard also did not rent out their houses for profit when they became prime ministers.

The prime minister’s house in Marrickville was last on the rental market in 2005 when it rented for $680 a week.

Since becoming prime minister, Albanese has also sold his Canberra unit in Barton, which he bought in 1996 for $192,000, for an undisclosed sum. Neighboring units have recently sold for around $550,000.

He also sold another investment rental property he owned, just down the street from his current home, which sold for $2.35 million in July 2021 after paying $1.115 million in 2012.

His second rental property in Dulwich Hill is leased to Chrissy Flanagan, his self-confessed number one fan and TikTok influencer.

The prime minister held on to this two-story terraced house on Dulwich Hill after selling other properties.

She told Daily Mail Australia how the prime minister had cut her rent by 25 per cent when the Covid pandemic hit, and not increased it afterwards.

“At the beginning of the pandemic, since my partner and I are small business owners in the hospitality industry, he reduced our rent by 25 percent, which was incredible at the time,” he said.

“But what’s more amazing is that even now, two years later, he still hasn’t put it back on.

Albanese bought the modern, three-bedroom, two-bathroom terrace home in Dulwich Hill in 2015 for $1.175 million.

“And it’s true that things are still patchy in the hospitality industry, but I don’t think other people are still getting that kind of support from their owners.”

She told Daily Mail Australia: ‘Not all politicians are the same in private as they are in public.

“I just think that if you get these little glimpses of what someone is really like, when no one is looking, that tells you something.

“It’s just a small reflection of what a person is like in private as to what they might be like when they have the opportunity to live out their values more broadly.”
