How Anglophile Margot Robbie loves the Tube, a pint on Clapham Common and Love Island

Margot Robbie cemented her Anglophile credentials yesterday when she met the stars of Love Island at the Barbie premiere in London – as fans flocked from McDonald’s, TGI Fridays and Slug and Lettuce to catch a glimpse of her.

The 33-year-old has spoken at length about her love of all things British – not least her time in Clapham, South West London – where she enjoyed alfresco pints, wild house parties and sweaty nights at Infernos, the infamous local nightclub.

The Aussie, who is married to a Briton, is also a huge fan of British reality TV – so much so that she once threw a Love Island themed birthday party. She was fangirling again at last night’s Barbie after-party, taking selfies with Ekin-Su Culcologlu, David Sanclimenti, Freedom Poole And Danny Taylor.

Season eight winner Ekin-Su took to Instagram that night and shared a carousel of snaps with Margot as they posed for the Barbie logo.

She wrote, “We queens” on a selfie before uploading a full-length photo of them both with the caption “I can’t” superimposed next to an emoji with a smiling crying face.

Ekin-Su’s ex-boyfriend Davide, 28, also managed to take selfies with Margot, writing, “I’m a Barbie man, in a Barbie world.”

Margot previously revealed that she thought the couple’s season was the “best Love Island season ever,” adding, “Paige [Thorne] has probably been my favorite – but for pure entertainment I think Davide and Ekin-Su made the season.”

Explaining her love for the series, she added, “Love Island reminds me of London life – I watched it with my girlfriends when everyone was home from work.”

Margot’s former home in Clapham, affectionately called ‘The Manor’ by the residents, was a hotbed of partying and hard drinking – followed by small excursions.

It was there that Margot began her relationship with her husband, Surrey-born filmmaker Tom Ackerley, and experienced what she describes as ‘the best of times’.

The lease on the property was originally signed in early 2014, shortly after the release of the film that would make her name: Martin Scorcese’s The Wolf Of Wall Street, in which she played seductress Naomi Lapaglia opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

In an April 2014 photo, captioned “the house is degenerating,” a brunette Margot poses almost unrecognizably on a rooftop with her new roommates.

“I was like a naughty schoolgirl,” she told Vanity Fair. ‘It was the first time I had actually lived in London and I wanted to try every pub. I’m not just going to look skinny.”

Another photo on her friend’s Instagram account shows Margot posing at South West Four, an electronic dance festival on Clapham Common.

She’s even admitted to frequenting tacky local nightclub Infernos, known for its tacky dance floor and cheesy 90s music playlist.

But Margot has always maintained that her pleasures are much more earthly. She praised the unlikely pleasures of living in Clapham in an interview with luxury London lifestyle magazine The Resident in 2017.

“For me, where you live and what you do should be simplistic and comfortable, otherwise how on earth can you relax?” she said.

“Clapham has always felt humble in the sense that you’re just left alone to get on with who you are, and that’s perfect. But I like to live with a lot of people. It reminds me of the house I grew up in.

‘It’s funny – I always think I want privacy because I’m never really alone. But when I am then I hate it. After five minutes I find people to hang out with.’

Margot has even spoken of her love for one of London’s more divisive features: the Underground.

During the UK premiere of Babylon in January, she told The Mirror: ‘I actually have two Oyster cards in my wallet right now. I always get the subway.’

And when asked if she’s been on the newest Elizabeth line, which opened last year, she said, “I haven’t, but I hear it’s beautiful!”

Margot married Tom Ackerley in December 2016 on a private property in Coorabell, Byron Bay.

The following year, the duo moved from London to a lavish 3,300-square-foot Los Angeles block with four bedrooms and six bathrooms.

Now that she’s in the US, it’s possible that Margot will meet one of her old friends – Prince Harry.

Speaking of their friendship in 2020, she said, “He’s a really great guy… I know like everyone else what a big decision it is to move to the other side of the world.”

She continued: “I still miss London very much, but I had my reasons for moving and they have their reasons for the decision.”

She previously joked that she left him hanging on texts.

“He’s actually pretty quick with texting. Unlike me. I write back four days later, sometimes weeks later,” she told American TV show Extra.
