Australian stars have spilled the beans over a very awkward lunch at Lord’s, in the immediate aftermath of Jonny Bairstow’s controversial punching.

Wicket-keeper Alex Carey’s quick reaction to sack Bairstow, when the Englishman assumed a delivery from Cameron Green was dead, set the tone for an explosive series between England and Australia in the Ashes.

The incident sparked a major debate over ‘the spirit of cricket’, with Australia insisting their consciences remained clear, despite some fans and pundits questioning the morality of the move.

The stumping happened just before lunch at the Home of Cricket, and speaking to 7Sport, a handful of Australian stars revealed that there was a frosty atmosphere between both groups of players over the meal.

Marnus Labuschagne revealed that Bairstow refused to eat anything before firing a shot at opener David Warner, to which the veteran responded curtly.

“The Sky crew knew Jonny was there and they just replayed it on screen. And while you do, everyone is watching. Obviously he sees us all looking and says, “Are you happy with that?”

David Warner spits out his chicken and says, “Yeah, whole.” The only words that were said.’

Steve Smith added, “It was funny,” while Mitch Marsh said the Aussies struggled to suppress their laughter after Warner’s comment.

“Remember when at school the teacher tells you not to laugh? Well I was trying to eat my soup so if you can imagine I’m eating my soup and I’m shaking like this and I’m just trying to look down and I look up at Jonny and I had pumpkin soup my whites down come.’

Travis Head said: ‘I had my back to Jonny but I could imagine Jonny watching us and when David said ‘very’ I and a few others got pats on the back.
