Housing crisis Australia: Mates swap rooms every six months to halve the rent evenly

Housemates switch rooms every six months to lower their rent in a desperate attempt to keep costs under control: “Are we genius or stupid?”

  • Housemates change their bedroom every six months
  • One room is larger and has a private bathroom
  • People wondered if it was a ‘genius or stupid’ idea

Two housemates decided to swap bedrooms every six months and divide the rent fairly.

Sam and Jake from Melbourne agreed on the compromise, as one room is larger than the other and has an en-suite bathroom.

The friends recently made the switch, with Jake getting the short straw this time and keeping the smaller bedroom.

Sam captured the process in a video shared on TikTok, but questioned whether the decision was “genius or stupid.”

Surprisingly, they are not the only housemates in Australia who have chosen to switch rooms during a rental period.

“Is this goddamn genius or downright stupid? Me and my roommate Jake switch rooms every six months,” he said in the video.

“We were both happy to pay the same rent and since one room is bigger than the other and has its own bathroom, we thought let’s share.”

While Sam admitted the process can be “a bit tricky,” he said it’s a “good way to clean up” and tidy up your belongings.

Thousands weighed in on their decision and opinions were divided.

“No, that’s smart,” one wrote, another said, “We’ve been doing the same for the past two years.”

A third added: ‘It’s such a great idea to switch rooms every six months [day’s] but it’s such a good compromise.’

But others weren’t on board with the idea.

“I’d be way too lazy to go through with this,” one person admitted.

“I’d rather pay a little more or less and keep one room all the time,” said another.
