A woman was cut with a knife by a stranger while walking near a Jewish synagogue.
The woman, in her 20s, was walking on Hotham St in St Kilda, in Melbourne’s south-east, when she was approached by the man about 8.40am on Tuesday.
It is alleged the man, 44, cut the woman on the arm and then tried to flee.
A good Samaritan managed to restrain him until emergency services arrived.

The 44-year-old was arrested and taken to hospital under police guard with minor injuries.
The woman was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Hotham St is closed in both directions between Inkerman St and Carlisle St.
The incident reportedly took place outside the Yeshivah Center, an Orthodox Jewish organization.
Victoria Police said in a statement that the woman and man did not know each other and ruled out it was a religiously motivated attack.
“At this early stage of the investigation there is nothing to indicate that the incident was religiously motivated,” police said.
