Hotel reception worker reveals the six most annoying habits guests have including checking out late

A hotel front desk worker listed some of the most annoying habits guests have, including trying to get a different room rate than what’s available, complaining about snack prices, and leaving late without notifying staff.

Justin Aldrich has worked at the Marriott hotel chain for seven years and said there are several things to avoid doing if you want to stay on the right side of the staff.

The number one annoying habit guests have, according to Justin, is being ‘surprised’ when the hotel they’re staying at doesn’t have the same amenities as a chain hotel in another city.

1. Acting surprised when amenities are different

“While select brands within a family of hotels, like Marriott or Hilton, do their best to be consistent around the world, they can’t,” Justin said. Well-informed person.

If you’re someone who always stays at a particular hotel brand, she recommends checking things like amenities, facilities, and menus before blindly booking somewhere different.

2. Discuss room rates

The second habit Justin hates is when guests start arguing that a room rate is different than what they saw online on Expedia or another booking site.

‘I understand it may be cheaper but as an employee I have no way of knowing when the screenshot is from nor can I match it. If I lowered the rate any further, I would risk having a face-to-face meeting with my manager the next morning,” Justin said.

3. Complain about the price of hotel snacks

The hospitality worker said too many guests complain about the price of snacks and drinks from hotel mini bars, fridges and shops compared to what they could get from the local gas station.

But, he said, once you’re in a hotel, “it’s all about luxury and convenience” and, unfortunately, that means you’ll pay a higher price for your snacks.

4. Thinking they’ll get away with smoking

Too many guests smoke in their room and think the staff will never know about it.

But Justin said that this is simply not the case and that he has seen every “trick in the book” of guests trying to cover up the smell.

“The towel under the door, the candle and the fan in the bathroom don’t do what you think they do… Each person has been fined $250 to $500,” Justin said.

5. Complain about ‘missing’ room features

Justin said that almost every week he will have complaints from guests who “didn’t like the room” or complain that they weren’t aware of missing features.

But he said everything and every detail is listed online, and you should do your research before you visit.

The hotel worker recommends taking 10 minutes to look at the photos of the room, facilities, and lobby before booking so you don’t get any surprises when you arrive.

6. Leaving late without asking

Finally, Justin said that it’s much easier on the staff if you ask for a late checkout, rather than just checking out late with no notice.

He said it’s usually not a big deal if you give advance notice as the cleaning crew can easily come back later.

But it only becomes difficult when you don’t communicate what you are looking for, as you could get blocked.

Other habits that irritate hotel staff

1. Interrupt: Redditors said that “nothing makes an employee feel less human than interrupting them during a sentence.”

2. Be inflexible: “We can’t wave a magic wand and make rooms look like your specifications,” said a hotel worker. “If we don’t have exactly what you want, we’ll often do our best to accommodate at least most of your needs.”

3. Tease: The hotel worker said that many people make fun of the staff, even though “they are forced to say certain things in a certain way.”

4. Staying on the phone for a long time: Hotel workers advise you to keep your phone calls short, as you may not be the only one calling.

5. Avoid small talk: As you approach the front desk, the hotel workers appreciate that you take the time for “small talk.” On the other hand, a hotel worker said that people who just walk up and ‘spit his name as an order’ get crap in return.
