A hot air balloon has been forced to make an emergency landing at a Melbourne reserve.

Surprised residents saw the balloon flying low over houses before touching down at Walter Street Reserve in Ascot Vale, in the west of the town, after touching down around 7:30am on Friday.

No one is believed to have been injured.

Ascot Vale residents were shocked to find a hot air balloon in the middle of a local reserve.

Photos from the scene show the balloon surrounded by stunned onlookers.

“I was on my morning walk and I noticed this hot air balloon going lower and lower and it just made an emergency landing near the goal posts,” Christine told 3AW.

Police later said it was a scheduled landing in the reserve.
