Horror as pet dog is killed and woman wounded after Gold Coast apartment is sprayed with bullets in ‘targeted attack’

A dog has died after multiple shots were fired from a high-powered rifle at a unit complex on the Gold Coast.

Police said Monday it was fortunate that no woman was killed in the shooting, which they described as a targeted attack.

A man allegedly fired seven shots through the sliding glass door at the back of the Mudgeeraba apartment early Sunday.

The small white dog was located in the living room and was shot in the shoulder, police said.

The 43-year-old female resident of the unit suffered a hand injury during the incident and later underwent surgery at Gold Coast University Hospital.

The pet was taken to a veterinarian for treatment but was later euthanized due to its injuries.

“It’s obviously quite sad for the pet owner,” Acting Chief Inspector Mark Mooney told reporters.

Police believe a man may have been present at the time of the shooting, but have not yet spoken to him.

“We believe it was targeted and there is no threat to the community,” Acting Supt Mooney said.

“It is extremely worrying and we are fortunate that the lady did not commit suicide otherwise we would be dealing with a murder investigation.

“It’s really scary… we’re still trying to determine the reasons why this occurred.”

The police say they are studying camera images.
