Horror at the Gold Coast Show after a toddler was bitten by snake

A family night out turned into a horror story after a toddler was bitten by a snake.

A young boy was visiting the annual Gold Coast Show in Southport with his family on Saturday when he felt something crawling up his leg.

The boy told event staff he thought the snake was a stick and tried to pick it up before he was bitten, the Gold Coast Bulletin reported.

He was treated for a suspected snakebite in the event’s medical tent and was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital by ambulance in a stable condition at 7.09pm.

It is still unclear what type of snake bit the boy. According to the Bulletin, the snake was simply described as “short.”

More than 120,000 partygoers attended the popular event last weekend.

The incident comes after Tony Harrison of Harrison’s Gold Coast and Brisbane Snake Catcher revealed his company received ten calls about snakes on Friday due to warming weather conditions.

He told the Courier Mail that it is ‘mad times’ as mating season has begun. Snakes have been found in a school in Southport, in the bedroom of a house and on the door handle of a shop in Broadbeach.

“It starts now and ends in October. That’s the crazy season,” he said.

“We’re starting with carpet pythons and green tree snakes now, then the eastern brown snakes and all the other stuff. And when the eastern brown snakes are done, they’re usually the last to go.

“The eastern brown trout mate for a much longer period for some reason.”
