Horror Cape Cod boat crash that killed Sadie Mauro, 17, is now a criminal investigation, but no charges have been filed yet
A criminal investigation has been launched into a horror boat accident in Cape Cod that killed a 17-year-old lacrosse star, but no arrests have been made so far.
Sadie Mauro, a senior at Dover-Sherborn Regional High School, was one of six people aboard the boat that crashed into the jetty at the entrance to Sesuit Harbor at 9 p.m. on July 21.
Mauro was thrown into the water and her body did not recover until 11:20 p.m. at Cold Storage Beach after a multi-agency search, police said in a statement.
A teenage boy, whose identity is unknown, was taken to hospital with a head injury.
The person piloting the ship has yet to be released and officials have yet to press charges or make any arrests Boston sphere reported.

Dennis Fire and Emergency spoke of the crash on a phone call shortly after it happened, with one person on the boat describing it as “screaming.”
It was also heard that the dispatcher said there was a language barrier when the first 911 calls were made to report the terror unfolding at the dock. Initial reports were that no one was there, but aid workers later learned that Mauro was missing.
Rescuers from the US Coast Guard, state and local police agencies, a regional dive team and local firefighters spent more than two hours searching for Mauro.
The District Attorney’s office, State Police detectives assigned to that office, and the Dennis Police Department are investigating the crash. It remains unclear how it crashed.
First Assistant District Attorney Jessica Elumba declined to comment on the case, but said an “active ongoing criminal investigation” was underway.
Harbor Master Dawson Farber told the outlet that they learned of the tragedy from a fisherman on one of the jetties who claimed he heard someone calling for help.
Mauro’s principal at Dover Sherborn High School described the young woman as “sincere and effortlessly kind.”
Mauro wrote on her recruiting page about her aspirations to play lacrosse in college, saying, “I can’t wait to continue my athletic and academic career collegiately!”
Multiple agencies searched overnight and the teen’s body was discovered around 11:30 p.m
“Sadie’s smile could light up a room, she had a heart of gold and the sweetest spirit,” Principal John Smith wrote in a letter to the parents.
“She had such a strong sense of self and loved adventure and anything outdoors,” he said, adding, “Sadie, a hard-working student and great athlete, was genuinely and effortlessly kind.”
Mauro excelled at lacrosse as a midfielder and competed in the State Championship last month.
The high school student wrote about her aspirations to play lacrosse in college recruitment pagestating, “I can’t wait to continue my athletic and academic career collegiately!”
A state police marine unit and an underwater recovery unit, along with marine resources from the Massachusetts Environmental Police, also conducted diving operations at the crash site the day after in an attempt to recover debris from the boat.
A preliminary investigation found that the ship was equipped with two 250-horsepower outboard motors with Alabama registration, according to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office.

After the crash, a meeting was held in the school library for middle and high school students.
“Members of the guidance team will be available in addition to a crisis counselor from the Riverside Trauma Center and service dogs from the Dover and Sherborn Police Department,” Smith wrote in a letter to the parents.
Dover-Sherborn Public Schools Superintendent Beth McCoy added, “The Dover-Sherborn community is strong and known for its strength and resilience in the face of an unimaginable tragedy.
“We will continue to support each other in the days and weeks to come as we surround Sadie’s family, friends and loved ones with care and love. I’m going to give my kids an extra tight hug tonight – I’m sure you’ll do the same.’
An obituary written by Mauro’s family described her as “a true light’ and one who ‘lived every day to the full’.

“She was born with a nature and wisdom beyond her years, which enabled her to live a full life that seemed much longer than her time here.
Confident, warm and empathetic in everything she did, and to everyone she met, our lives will always be better and brighter thanks to her example.
A ‘Celebration of Life’ was held at the Unitarian Universalist Church on July 28.
