A 39-year-old woman slipped and fell 30 meters while celebrating her engagement with a picnic on a cliff in a scenic spot in Turkey.

Yesim Demir was vacationing with her boyfriend Nizamettin Gursu on Cape Polente in Canakkale, a town in northwestern Turkey’s Marmara region, when the tragic accident happened.

He had just proposed to her and they went to the cliff to celebrate with a picnic while watching the sunset.

Gursu then allegedly left to get the picnic supplies from the car, but said he suddenly heard a scream.

He hurried back, only to find that his new betrothed had fallen off the cliff.

She fell 100 feet (32 m) and reportedly survived the plunge on the evening of July 6, but died of her injuries shortly afterwards, despite doctors — who called her fiancé — trying to resuscitate her for 45 minutes.

A devastated Gursu told local media, ‘We chose the cliffs to have a romantic memory after the proposal. We drank some alcohol. Everything happened at once. She lost her balance and fell down.’

Authorities immediately sealed off the area and launched an investigation, with access to the cliff not allowed again until July 15 in a controlled manner.  This means, according to reports, no pedestrians or vehicles are allowed in the area within 15-20 minutes after sunset.

One of Demir’s grieving friends told local media, “This is a place where everyone comes to watch the sunset.

“However, the roads are very bad and there is no precaution on the edge of the cliff. A fence must be built here, precautions must be taken.’
