An ice hockey player was horrifically injured during a match between Nottingham and Sheffield when fans were told to leave the stadium due to a ‘major medical emergency’.

Adam Johnson is said to have taken an ice hockey blade to his neck during the match between Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers at the Utilita Arena Sheffield tonight.

About 8,000 fans witnessed the clash before the match was quickly stopped and screens were installed on the pitch to protect the players involved.

Paramedics also attended the scene before a Panthers player was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Shocked fans have taken to social media to share their horror at the accident. One person wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “A nightmare at the Panthers game tonight, praying for Adam Johnson.”

Another said: ‘That was without a doubt the worst thing I’ve ever seen happen, I’m so sorry. We are all sick to death with worry and praying for a miracle.’

A third wrote: ‘Thoughts are with Adam Johnson. Terrible to hear.’

A fourth wrote: ‘I really hope he’s doing well and news of his recovery will be posted soon. Thoughts and prayers for him and his family at this very anxious time.”

A spectator said on X: ‘Paramedics are on the ice now, players form a ring around him and now there are screens around him. ‘Horrible scenes here at the Sheffield Arena.’

Nottingham Panthers wrote: ‘Fans have been asked to leave the building due to a major medical emergency.’
