Horror as baby dies after alleged assault in Hobart, Australia

A 10-month-old baby boy who was taken to hospital with serious injuries after an alleged assault has died.

Daniel John Ridgers, 25, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to the child by shaking him and dropping him into a crib on November 30.

Ridgers did not enter a plea or apply for bail during the out-of-hours hearing in Hobart's Magistrate Court and was remanded in custody.

Tasmania Police released a statement on Monday saying the little boy had died.

“Our condolences go out to the baby's family and loved ones,” the statement said.

“The police investigation is ongoing.”

On Saturday, detectives revealed they believe the child was injured in a “serious assault” but warned the investigation is expected to take “some time.”

“Police were called to the Royal Hobart Hospital at around 5.20am… after a child suffered serious injuries that are believed to be suspicious,” police said.

Ridgers will appear in court on Monday, December 4.
