A child has tragically died after being hit by a vehicle in a parking lot in a horror crash in Melbourne’s east.
Emergency workers rushed to Springfield Road in Blackburn North at around 6.45pm on Saturday evening.
The child could not be resuscitated at the scene, despite frantic efforts by paramedics.
The driver of the car stopped to assist and is assisting police with their investigation.
Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit have launched an investigation.

“The circumstances surrounding the collision have yet to be determined and the investigation is ongoing,” a police statement said.
The tragedy comes just days after two young brothers were hit and pinned by a car while playing in a laneway.
Brothers Burak and Huseyin Pek, aged three and eight, were playing football in an alley behind their grandparents’ house in Braybrook when they were hit by a Toyota Prado allegedly driven by an unlicensed driver.
Police are also investigating a separate fatal crash in Templestowe just hours earlier on Saturday afternoon after a Toyota Prado and a motorcycle collided at a busy intersection.
The motorcyclist died on the spot.
The driver, a 51-year-old woman, is assisting police with the investigation.

The current number of deaths on Victorian roads stands at 213, up from 186 this time last year.
Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are investigating two fatal crashes in Melbourne within hours on Saturday
