This is the horrifying moment when nurses discover a dead newborn thrown into a hospital garbage bag by a teenage mother who claims she was unaware she was pregnant.
Alexee Trevizo, 19, can be seen running to the bathroom at Artesia General Hospital, New Mexico, in January this year in new surveillance footage.
Trevizo had gone to hospital with back pain, but tests showed she was pregnant and in labor.
The new footage shows that nearly 20 minutes elapse before she returns to her room on the ward and allows staff to inspect the toilet after she leaves.
Investigators say that after using the bathroom, she gave birth to the baby boy before throwing him in the trash.
Trevizo was charged in May with first-degree murder plus one count of tampering with evidence and has been released without an ankle bracelet until a trial date.
Shortly after she left the toilet, a cleaner made the shocking discovery and here is staff seen after they made the discovery
The cleaner who made the gruesome discovery is comforted in this photo by two other members of staff before being led away from the crime scene
More than twenty minutes later, a housekeeper can be seen cleaning the toilet after staff said they discovered blood inside.
The cleaner is seen calling another member of staff and the two peer into a black bin bag before both quickly step back.
After realizing what they’ve found, more staff can arrive on site to check the contents of the bin.
Five minutes after the discovery, the cleaner who found the newborn can be seen being comforted by two members of staff before being led away by another with an arm over her shoulder.
Police officers are seen on the scene shortly afterwards and bodycam footage has captured the moment when a doctor explains to Trevizo and her mother, “We discovered a dead baby in the bathroom.”
Trevizo tells the doctor, “I’m sorry, it came from me and I didn’t know what to do… I was just scared, it wasn’t crying or anything.”
Trevizo’s distraught mother holds her head in her hands as she pleads with her daughter, saying, “What have you done?”
“What did you do with it,” demands the mother, desperately holding her head in her hands, before the doctor tells her to “stop doing that.”
Trevizo’s mother appears to have been unaware that her daughter was nine months pregnant
“It came from me, I put it in the bag. In the garbage bag. I’m sorry mom,” the traumatized teen whispers
“The first priority guys,” the doctor continues, “is she just had a baby, I don’t know if she got the placenta. She’s bleeding a lot,” she says before explaining that the teen needs to see an obstetrician.
“I’m sorry, but when it comes to having a baby and it looked like you were trying to cover it up, we have to call the police.
‘The baby has to be taken for an autopsy and an examiner comes and everything,’ the doctor continues calmly.
“I’m so sorry, but we have to do this correctly and I want to be transparent about what our steps will be.”
“Nothing cried, it came out with nothing,” Trevizo repeats.
A male medic in the room then asks the mother and daughter if they have any questions, to which Trevizo’s mother asks how big the baby is.
“It’s full-time,” replies the masked medic.
‘What!’ she exclaims, suggesting she was unaware that her daughter was nine months pregnant prior to the birth.
Alexee Trevizo, 19, has admitted giving birth to a baby boy and putting him in a bin
Recently released bodycam footage shows the heartbreaking confession
“Lexi, did you watch the news, about what the girls are doing to their babies and they’re going to jail,” the mother asks in frustration.
A traumatized Trevizo breaks down in tears and is then told that detectives are on their way to talk to her and she is now being held in hospital under police custody.
At the beginning of the bodycam footage released, a nurse told responding officers that Trevizo had a positive pregnancy test but denied having sex.
Investigators say that by the time the baby was found, it had died and an autopsy listed the cause of death in March as the cause of death.
On May 10, police charged Trevizo with first-degree murder, “or else” intentionally assaulting a child resulting in death, plus a charge of tampering with evidence.
Trevizo has since been released from prison and will be able to complete the school year without an ankle bracelet or house arrest as she awaits trial.
Gary C. Mitchell, a lawyer for Trevizo, previously told the Associated Press that his client has no criminal record and should not stand trial for murder.
He said there are “major discrepancies about what happened” at the hospital and “this is not a classic child abuse case.”
This is the second high-profile case of a mother and newborn in New Mexico in recent years.
Jurors convicted 19-year-old Alexis Avila of throwing her newborn into an outdoor garbage can in January 2020 in Hobbs, New Mexico.
