This is the terrifying moment when a man was fatally hit by a car while kissing his girlfriend on a sidewalk in Brazil.

Jonathan Ribeiro, 31, and his 26-year-old girlfriend were walking their dog in São Paulo’s South Zone on Sunday when the car slammed into them near the gas station.

Surveillance footage of the incident first released Thursday shows Ribeiro and his partner being dragged along the sidewalk before the vehicle came to a stop.

A man from a nearby company was seen running to the car and opening the door before another person arrived to prevent the escape of the 30-year-old driver, whose name has not been released.

Ribeiro was rushed to the municipal hospital of Campo Limpo, where he died of his injuries.

His girlfriend suffered a broken shoulder and bruises to her head and legs.

Military Police officers conducted a breathalyzer test which revealed the driver was under the influence of alcohol, but not over the limit.

Police also searched the car and found drugs.

The driver was questioned by the police at the scene and said he could not remember anything about the accident.

He was taken into custody and appeared before a judge, who granted him provisional release, according to Brazilian news channel G1.

Under the terms of the release, the man must appear in court twice a month and may not leave the neighborhood where he lives for more than eight hours a day.

He is also obliged to inform the court of any change of address and is not allowed to visit ‘bars, nightclubs, brothels and the like’.
