Director/star Kevin Costner’s $100 million gamble – Horizon: An American Saga – apparently didn’t pay off at the box office with a rather tepid debut.

The film also received a fairly mild reception from critics, with a rating of only 40% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

As for Horizon, it remains to be seen how the lukewarm reception from both critics and the box office will affect the future of this potential franchise.
The second chapter in this saga will debut in theaters in August, with the filmmaker planning two more films.

Production has already begun on the third film, and the fourth and final film is in development, although it is unclear when filming will begin.
However, if the second chapter also flops, there could be pressure to pull the plug entirely, but it remains to be seen whether that will be the case.

It’s not the first time one of Costner’s biggest projects has been a box office flop. Waterworld debuted in 1995 to a lackluster reception.
Considered the most expensive film ever made with a budget of a whopping $175 million, Waterworld opened in late July 1995 to just $21.1 million.
The film only grossed $88.2 million domestically, but did much better overseas, earning $175.9 million overseas. Worldwide, the film grossed $264.2 million.
Still, the film was unprofitable at the time, as cinemas accounted for about half of the total revenue. But after its release on video, the film would eventually become profitable.
Whether Horizon: An American Saga will ultimately become profitable after its slow release in theaters remains to be seen.
