A rare Mercedes owned by Beatles legends John Lennon and George Harrison is going under the hammer for an undisclosed six-figure sum.

The star-studded 600 Pullman was purchased by Lennon in 1970. However, the car was also owned by Mary Wilson of The Supremes.

The rare car is one of only 39 right-hand drive, four-door Pullmans ever produced.

It was fully restored at the Mercedes-Benz factory by its previous owner and is now being sold by supercar dealer Tom Hartley Jnr.

The rear cabin is decorated with Mercedes’ iconic polished wood and leather decor and features four luxurious seats facing each other.

In addition to John Lennon, the car has also been owned by his bandmate George Harrison and Mary Wilson of The Supremes

The car was purchased in 2007 by its current owner, a British collector and philanthropist

Lennon ordered the new 600 Pullman in late 1969 and opted to add some musical extras, including a Blaupunkt radio, Pioneer tape recorder and a Philips-Mignon record player, as well as a number of speakers to create an impressive sound system.

He also asked for dividing glass between the driver and passenger compartments, flexible reading lights in the rear and thicker padding on the driver’s seat cushion.

The original logbook shows that the car was registered in Lennon’s name on February 19, 1970.

It was a common transportation choice for Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono and they were photographed getting out of the car at the launch of Ono’s book Grapefruit in July 1971.

However, he didn’t have the car for long, when he and his family moved to the United States, he sold it to fellow Beatles star Harrison.

Car enthusiast Harrison had owned a 600 Pullman in the 1960s before buying it from Lennon. That car was sold at auction in 2021 for £145,000.

He kept this Pullman in his home in Oxfordshire and in 1975 Mary Wilson and her husband Pedro Ferrer were invited to dinner. Harrison gave them a tour of the property, including showing them this car.

The couple was impressed, and Wilson wrote in her biography that when they saw the Pullman, they decided they just had to have it.

The Motown star used the Pullman for tours in both the US and Britain, and was photographed in it several times.

She owned it until it was sold at Christie’s in 1989, when it was purchased by Jarmo Hellas of the International Pullman Group.

He sent it back to the Mercedes-Benz factory for a full restoration, which involved stripping the car down and overhauling it.

It was purchased in 2007 by its current owner, a British collector and philanthropist.

A spokesperson for Tom Hartley Jr. said: ‘Chassis 001580 is one of the rare right-hand drive, four-door 600 Pullmans and it is certainly the most important 600 ever built.

The car was completely restored by the previous owner in the Mercedes-Benz factory

‘It was commissioned new and owned by music legend and cultural icon John Lennon and was equipped with a host of extras befitting one of the biggest music stars of all time.

‘While many Pullmans were furnished with trivial items such as a bar, John Lennon opted for extras that gave him a refuge for his creativity and allowed him to enjoy a variety of music.

‘Chassis 001580 would be a very nice car in itself, as it is a rare right-hand drive four-door 600 Pullman that has performed exceptionally well after its restoration by Mercedes-Benz.

‘However, if you consider that the first three owners, all from real music royalty, and the first owner is an icon of the 20th century, then it should actually be seen not only as an important car, but also as a unique opportunity to to buy a car. very special piece of history.’

They added: ‘We’re super happy to have been the ones to bring this car to market. There can’t be another car anywhere in the world that has such a rock star pedigree.”
