Homeowners share interior design trends that they think will ‘age poorly’ in hilarious Reddit thread

Homeowners have shared interior design trends they think will “age poorly” in a fun Reddit thread, including farmhouse-style lighting, sliding barn doors, and every kind of quote on the wall.

Thousands of people listed ‘current aesthetic trends they think will age poorly’, while others said they felt ‘seen’ by the idea that some of the trends in their home will ever date.

The first thing that many agreed on in the thread they were word signs.

One person said: “Anything you say live, laugh, love…or honestly any combination of those words” (file image)

“Yes, we know you ‘eat’ in the kitchen,” one person wrote.

Another said: ‘Anything I say live, laugh, love…or honestly any combination of those words.’

While a third said they ‘already think’ that the time to live, laugh and love has passed.

“I feel like the peak of Live Laugh Love was like 2011 or something. That already seems old-fashioned to me,” wrote one woman.

The second trend that some have highlighted coming soon is the trend for farmhouse-style lights, particularly when it’s not a farmhouse (stock image)

Farmhouse Style Lights

The second trend that some highlighted as soon to be dated is the trend for farmhouse-style lights:

“Those totally overused ‘cottage’ lamps, you know, the ones where it’s just an empty square (or rectangular) frame around a light bulb,” one person wrote.

Another went even further, listing the “urban farm or whatever it’s called” trend.

“Complete package includes: white exterior with black window frames, interior: white walls, white cabinet doors, gray vinyl plank flooring, rectangular light fixture over island, barn doors, faux reclaimed wood,” one person said.

‘As a variation, the cabinets are blue with yellow handles.’

Some said they can’t stand all-grey interiors, associating it with the fins on houses and calling it a ‘boring’ color (archive image)

All gray interiors

Some said they can’t stand all-grey interiors.

‘Flipper grey, everything is so boring,’ wrote one person.

“I’m a sucker for gray paint, but I hate fake gray decking,” added another.

But a third was quick to defend the grey, writing: ‘Grey is not just a real estate trend. It’s great in everything from web design to fashion because it’s easy on the eyes and works with just about any accent color you want. I really don’t see gray going away anytime soon.

sliding barn doors

Included under the farmhouse bracket was the current fashion for sliding barn doors.

“Barn doors and farm sinks, unless the house is actually on land/farm,” one person said.

Another added: ‘Those damn barn doors. Pocket it or leave it alone’.

Moroccan-inspired tiles

Moroccan tiles are huge right now, especially in bathrooms, where it’s often worth making a style statement.

What current trend do you think is the worst?

  • Moroccan-inspired tiles 2 votes
  • all all white 3 votes
  • Blue cabinets with gold hardware 2 votes
  • brown granite countertops 2 votes
  • faux wood floors 3 votes
  • painted brick 3 votes

But some Reddit users take offense at them, writing:

‘Moroccan tile everywhere. It fits in some houses, but right now it’s being put everywhere. I don’t think it will age well except in houses where it’s in line with the rest of the architecture.’

painting everything white

Many people say that a quick and easy way to modernize a place is to give it a lick of paint.

And no color is more popular than white in this regard.

‘Painting everything old white is a trend that will have a date,’ wrote one person.

‘All. White. Everything,” added another.

A third wrote: ‘Everything is a shade of gray or white. That sh*t is going to elicit reactions like lime green tile in a bathroom. People will refer to monochrome homes as mental hospitals 20 years from now.”

Blue cabinets with gold hardware

Others didn’t like the current trend of blue cabinets with gold hardware that is extremely popular in kitchens and bathrooms.

Blue cabinets. Also light blue above, dark blue below. They never get the color right,” wrote one person.

“The tired rush of blue cabinets and gold hardware for kitchens and baths,” added another.

brown granite countertops

Also in the kitchen, lots of brown granite counter tops scrapped as “something from my chain smoking great grandmother’s house”.

“Brown granite countertops with white appliances are the worst,” added another.

faux wood floors

When it comes to flooring, many people are opting for “quality” faux hardwood flooring right now.

“Faux hardwood floors will be the avocado shag rug of our time,” wrote one person.

Another added: ‘LVP flooring, sorry doesn’t look like wood. It’ll be another dead giveaway of the age before long.’

painted brick

Finally, many said they can’t stand painted brick.

“Painted brick, if you don’t want to look at it, plaster or stucco it, or if you want to see the outline of the brick, put it in a bag,” wrote one person.

‘Painting is a quick and poorly thought out brick restoration process.’
