Aussie bloke reveals little-known $150,000 job in booming industry desperate for more workers

An Aussie man who earns $150,000 a year as the owner of a home security company has revealed why the sector is suddenly booming.

The Brisbane man, who was interviewed by jobs app Getahead, said an increasing number of Australians are purchasing security systems in response to recent crime waves.

While adding the increased crime rate was “unfortunate,” the man said it has “absolutely” allowed his industry to thrive.

“Unfortunately, it really helps my industry and helps my business grow,” he said.

‘On the other hand, I also make sure that people feel safe.

“It’s a double-edged sword.”

The business owner said he made between $80,000 and $150,000 a year installing security systems in Brisbane homes.

But he had some advice for Australians eager to get into the workplace.

Advertised salaries in the homeland security sector rose by a whopping 15.4 percent last year to $93,536, while crime rates rose in almost every state and territory (stock)

“Come on, go have some fun, go travel,” he said.

“Traveling was the best thing that gave me confidence and made me want to go places in life.

“Go there and live.”

Working in the industry includes installing and maintaining security systems such as CCTV cameras and alarm or motion sensors in homes and businesses.

It also requires registration with an Australian Communications and Media Authority approved provider and a security installation license from a state approved provider.

The Australian Security Industry Association estimates that the private security industry generates approximately $11 billion per year, with approximately 180,000 employees nationwide.

Queensland saw a rise in assaults, assaults, robberies, blackmail, burglaries and motor vehicle thefts in 2023, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Up to 18,210 people reported incidents of car theft during the year, the highest recorded number of victims since 2000.

The ABS data showed crime rates in almost every Australian state and territory showed a similar increase, with sexual violence reaching a 31-year high.

ABS head of crime and justice statistics Samantha McNally said there were 36,318 victims of sexual violence recorded by police in 2023.

“Taking into account population growth, the number of registered survivors of victims of sexual violence has increased from 126 per 100,000 people last year, to 136 survivors of victims per 100,000 people,” she said.

Salaries advertised on Seek for industry positions increased by a whopping 15.4 percent last year to $93,536, according to Yahoo.

It was the third largest increase of the year, behind only operations team members whose salaries rose 21.2 percent and support engineers rose 17.3 percent.

Seek’s head of market data and customer analytics for Australia and New Zealand, Leigh Broderick, said key sectors saw huge salary increases last year, including education, infrastructure and trade and manufacturing.

“Increasing demand for these workers, coupled with ongoing talent shortages and a willingness to offer higher salaries for more specialized and technical positions, will likely lead to larger pay increases in these positions,” Broderick said.
