Why you need to clean your wooden spoon now: Home chef ‘disgusted’ after trying popular hack – and she’s not alone
- A home cook was disgusted after boiling her wooden spoons in boiling water
- The reason the trick works is because excess oil seeps out of the wood
A home cook has been left “disgusted” after trying a viral hack for cleaning wooden spoons that involves placing the utensil in boiling water to see what cooking oil seeps out of the wood.
The American Lulaboo Jenkins shared a video TikTok where she tried out the hack with her own wooden spoons – and was “amazed” by the results.
“Holy cr*p, I should have done this sooner. Lord help me, this was gross,” Lulaboo captioned the clip.

“I never thought about taking my wooden spoons and actually cleaning them up a bit,” she said.
“Some I have had for years and now I am very scared. This is one of my oldest here, and you can tell by the black dots.’
Once the water boiled, she took her utensils and placed them in the water, letting them bubble for a few minutes:
‘Okay, all set. Let’s see what happened,’ she said.
‘Oh my God, I can’t even see the bottom anymore. This is so dirty.’
The video has gone viral and has been viewed more than 49 million times, prompting thousands of others to try it for themselves at home.
“I personally never use wooden utensils because they are porous and absorbent,” said one person.
‘I’m definitely going to do this. All the curries I make with wooden spoons I can only imagine,” added another.
A third wrote, “This is why I hate anything made of wood.”
The wooden spoon test has resurfaced on social media in recent years, with many mothers sharing their results
A mother of two has revealed why you should always thoroughly clean your wooden spoon after discovering hidden cooking oil in her utensils. The simple kitchen trick is to soak the spoons in boiling water for up to 20 minutes to see what oil seeps out of the wood
Earlier Chantel Mila, mother from Melbourne, said that you should regularly clean your wooden spoons thoroughly:
“When was the last time you thoroughly cleaned your wooden spoon?” Chantel said.
According to Matt Preston, his method is to remove cooking oil buildup over the years. It was amazing to see how much was hidden there.
“Hot water releases cooking oil that’s in the spoon. The hidden oil will float to the surface. Soaking helps to thoroughly clean the inside of the wood, whereas normal washing only washes the outside.’
The mom shared a TikTok video showing her trying out former MasterChef judge Matt Preston’s cleaning method: soaking used wooden spoons in a cup of boiling water
The famed food critic devised the “wooden spoon test” a few years ago to help home cooks determine if it’s time to throw away their wooden spoon.
‘A perfect gift on the surface, but put an old one in a cup of boiling water to see what fate awaits all wooden spoons. Have a sniff. Phew, smelly! And that’s what you were going to stir your custard with,” Preston said in a piece for Delicious.
“Instead, ask for a $10 silicone spatula. They’re sanitary, heat resistant, and flexible, so they’re great for getting into the corner of a pan or getting the last skerrick out of a bowl.”
