Home and Away star Tammin Sursok celebrates two years of sobriety – as she reveals the ‘terrible’ moment that made her quit drinking for good

Tammin Sursok celebrated an incredible milestone on Wednesday when she revealed that she hasn’t touched a glass of alcohol in two years.

The former Home and Away star, 41, told Ny Breaking Australia she was previously like any other true blue Australian of drinking age, reaching out for a glass of wine at a social event.

But in October 2022 the Sh*t Show podcast The hostess decided to jump on the bandwagon for good and stopped using alcohol as a crutch to ease her social anxiety.

‘I wasn’t an alcoholic and I don’t want this to take away from people who are struggling. I only drank because we are told it is a social thing,” Tammin assured.

‘Sometimes it helped with my anxiety, and over time I realized that, especially as you get older and hormones change, alcohol just wasn’t working for me anymore.

“I think growing up in Australia you think you might stand out because you don’t drink, so I didn’t say anything for a while because I didn’t struggle with that.”

“Then the need for it slowly started to disappear over time. It took a while,” she added.

Tammin went on to say that she has been a teetotaler for about four years, but revealed that it was two years ago that she stopped drinking for good.

‘I drank half a glass of champagne after I finished filming the movie Blood, Sweat & Cheer [later released in 2023]she said.

‘It was an intense film physically and emotionally… at the end I remember thinking, “Oh my god, this film is done, I want to celebrate this beautiful experience.”

‘I drank a glass of wine and the next day I had a terrible migraine. I thought, ‘This is something that’s affecting me in a negative way, even though it’s supposed to be such a great time.’

It’s been a while since Tammin “felt tipsy,” she said, but added that even half a glass of alcohol was enough to damage her health.

Tammin revealed that she sometimes gets eye migraines that cause impaired vision and speech, and send “tingling sensations down my arm.”

These migraines were only exacerbated by Tammin’s weekly social drinking, which saw her consume an average of four drinks each week.

‘I would never have more than two [in a sitting] because for me, I would feel so terrible after two,” she assured.

‘When I was in my early 30s you could go to an event, two on Monday, nothing on Tuesday, one on Wednesday and then two on Friday. That was a constant thing.”

Tammin added: ‘I had very little time where I really felt good.’

She said she often used alcohol as a crutch to ease her social anxiety when attending events.

‘That was the most important thing for me, as well as drinking with food. “I loved having a glass of wine with dinner, but I always came home feeling dizzy and nauseous,” she said.

But these days, “I can honestly say I don’t miss it. I don’t think about it. I don’t miss it. It’s no longer part of our lives.’

The actress, who shares daughters Phoenix, 11, and Lennon, 5, with her husband Sean McEwen, said she has noticed a new wave of people who have stopped drinking socially.

“I think there’s a big push for a sober lifestyle and I think the more we talk about it, I think it will help a lot of people.”

She added: ‘I think the more we talk about this and the more stories we share, a lot of people won’t feel like it’s a taboo subject to not drink.’

Tammin celebrated her second year of sobriety on Wednesday by sharing a heartfelt video on Instagram.

The caption wondered if the actress thought she could have fun while sober, before grinning and sharing a montage of her action-packed year.

The star appeared to be having the time of her life as she attended events and concerts and had fun with her friends without an ounce of alcohol in sight.

She revealed in the post’s caption that she never thought she would quit drinking alcohol, but said she started wondering why two years ago.

“Why do I do something that ends up making me feel worse for the few hours I felt good?” Why did I take time off tomorrow?’ she wrote.

She added that she doesn’t miss drinking and is “actually more excited to be social and have fun, go to concerts, be with my family.”

‘I share my journey. You do you! This could also be inspiration and a sign to try something new in 2025 and see how it goes!’ she finished.

She later gained acclaim in the US-made teen series Pretty Little Liars, for which she also hosted a podcast.

These days, Tammin says she spends “40 percent” of her time in Australia as host of her new podcast The Sh*t Show with Tammin Sursok.

Tammin invites her famous Australian friends onto the podcast for candid conversations and juicy interviews that she shares with her fans.

“I wanted it to touch the people who knew me growing up,” she told Ny Breaking Australia of her series.
