Hollywood star Kevin Spacey arrives at court this morning to stand trial for sex offenses

A sleeping man awoke to find Hollywood star Kevin Spacey performing a sexual act on him, the actor’s trial heard today.

The Oscar-winning actor, who denies 12 sex offences, was described in Southwark Crown Court as a ‘sexual bully’ who enjoys teasing people feeling ‘powerless and uncomfortable’.

Victims described Spacey as very ‘sensitive’ and ‘someone who spoke quite openly about his sexuality’

In one incident, a victim fell asleep after drinking and smoking cannabis with Spacey, only to wake up to find the actor sexually assaulting him, it was said.

District Attorney Christine Agnew, KC, said: ‘He awoke several hours later with his belt intact, but his button and zip were down. Kevin Spacey Fowler was kneeling next to him and sucking his penis.”

Kevin Spacey – seen today arriving at Southwark Crown Court – has previously denied 12 charges, including assault and indecent assault

On another occasion, the actor is accused of assaulting a man backstage when he “grabbed his penis so hard it was painful.”

Victims of ‘Star-struck’ didn’t dare come forward for fear they wouldn’t be believed because of his fame, jurors heard.

The prosecution said of one victim, “Kevin Spacey Fowler was a star, a golden boy as he (the victim) put it.

“He wasn’t sure he would be believed and even if he had been, he didn’t think he would get any support.”

M Agnew told jurors the first plaintiff was a driver between the ages of 30 and 34.

“It was unusual for the defendant to normally sit in the front passenger seat of the car,” Ms Agnew said.

“When he started driving, the prosecutor recalls that he was very ‘sensitive’ and someone who spoke very openly about his sexuality.”

‘(The complainant) thought this was unusual – it was not the normal kind of conversation he would have with a passenger or customer.

“(Complainant) describes himself as a ‘man’s man’ and felt uncomfortable and awkward when he had to be around Kevin Spacey Fowler because of his sexualized behavior.”

Ms Agnew continued: “Over time, the inappropriate and unwanted touching intensified and progressed to inciting Mr. Spacey Fowler [the complainant’s] leg and rubs his neck.

This behavior escalated to occasions where Kevin Spacey would actually grab and grope Fowler [the complainant] in an aggressive way.’

Ms Agnew said the first accuser went to the police in 2022. She added that it’s possible that Spacey got a “sexual kick from this kind of sexual assault.”

Jurors further learned about the second complainant sitting near Spacey at the Haymarket Theater in 2005.

The complainant, who was about 28 years old at the time, recalls the actor asking if they were “f***ed,” the court heard.

Ms Agnew said the complainant was ‘shocked’ and initially ignored the comments before Spacey put his hand on his leg.

During a subsequent interaction more than an hour later, when the complainant was showing Spacey around backstage, Spacey reportedly “grabbed his penis with such force that it was painful.”

Ms Agnew added that Spacey ‘just laughed’ after the complainant pushed him away.

The court further heard about a third plaintiff who met Spacey “briefly” a few times while he was performing in a play at the Old Vic Theatre.

In 2008, the complainant, who had moved to London after completing drama school, wrote to Spacey “seeking his help with mentorship,” jurors heard.

The court was told that Spacey called him a few weeks later and they met that night, ending up at the actor’s apartment. Ms Agnew said: ‘During the conversation (the complainant) thanked him for the part in the play where Mr Spacey Fowler opened his arms to hug him.

‘(The complainant) didn’t move to hug him back because he thought it was a ‘little weird’, so Kevin Spacey Fowler stretched forward and hugged him around the waist, placing his face in (the) crotch of (the complainant).’

The actor pleaded not guilty in January to three counts of indecent assault, three assaults and one count of inciting sexual activity without a person's consent.

Jurors heard the complainant run away and later “fall asleep or pass out,” noting afterwards that it was “unusual” for him to “go out.” The court heard that the complainant later awoke to find Spacey performing oral sex on him.

“Despite (the prosecutor) saying no, he continued, so (the prosecutor) pushed him away,” the prosecutor said. Ms Agnew added that Spacey had told the complainant not to tell anyone what had happened before the man went to a bus stop ‘where he was crying’.

Opening the trial, Ms. Agnew called Spacey a “sexual bully.”

She said, “Kevin Spacey Fowler is an actor; many of you will know that. He is a very famous actor who has won a number of awards. He acted in many movies and TV series…

“He is also, the prosecution alleges, a man who sexually assaults other men. A man who doesn’t respect personal boundaries or space, a man who seems to take pleasure in making others feel powerless and uncomfortable – a sexual bully.

“His preferred method of attack is that he seems to aggressively grab other men in the groin.”

As the jurors stared wide-eyed at the famous actor sitting in the dock, the prosecution told them not to be “starry.”

“It’s only right that you might feel a little star smitten or overwhelmed that you’re part of the jury to try such a famous person, but… you have to keep yourself grounded and faithful stick to the oath you took.’ she said.

Dressed in a gray suit, the 63-year-old defendant looked to the floor as the case was opened.

Earlier, Spacey arrived at court smiling at around 8:45 a.m., in time to grab a cup of coffee in the foyer before heading to Courtroom 2 for the start of his month-long trial.

The veteran actor is accused of carrying out 12 sexual assaults on four men, dating back to his 22 years as artistic director at London’s Old Vic theatre.

He has been charged with three counts of indecent assault, seven counts of sexual assault, one count of inciting sexual activity without consent, and one count of inciting penetrative sexual activity between 2001 and 2013.

He pleaded not guilty to all 12 charges at a January hearing

The former House of Cards star began his career as a theater actor in the 1980s, before rising to fame in hit movies like Glengarry Glen Ross, Se7en, Horrible Bosses, and LA Confidential.

He won his first Academy Award for a supporting role in The Usual Suspects and received an Oscar for Best Actor in 1999 for his role in American Beauty.

Spacey joined the Old Vic in 2003 and made his Shakespearean debut two years later starring in Richard II.

He has attracted big names to London theatre, including Jeff Goldblum, Sam Mendes, Colm Meaney and Neve Campbell, and was honored with an honorary knighthood shortly after his tenure as Artistic Director in 2015.

When the actor was charged in May 2022 following a long-running investigation by the Metropolitan Police, he released a statement saying: “I very much appreciate the statement from the prosecution where they carefully reminded the media and the public that I have the right to a fair trial and innocent until proven guilty.

“While I am disappointed with their decision to move forward, I will voluntarily appear in the UK as soon as this can be arranged and defend myself against these allegations, which I am sure will prove my innocence.”

The process continues.
