This year’s Christmas quiz with cards raised money for the homeless organization Shelter.

As well as the quiz, there was also a silent auction – where quizzers had the chance to bid on prizes such as a private cinema screening at Selfridges and a meal for two with wine chosen by a sommelier at The Chiltern Firehouse.

In total the event raised £2,561.01 for Shelter.

The Barley Mow first took part in a weekly pub quiz over ten years ago, but it never really got off the ground and was eventually ‘killed’ by Covid.

The pub’s team decided to relaunch after the pandemic and found there was ‘a new appetite for quizzes’, with the event becoming increasingly busy every Tuesday.

However, things really started to take off when they started inviting celebrity guests to read out their Top Ten Questions – with multi-award winning actress Dame Judi Dench starting the tradition.

Landlord Will Norris, who has worked at the pub on and off for a decade and bought it from the former owner three years ago, said: ‘When we initially tasted it it never really took off – and then Covid made it broken of course. .

“But we relaunched in 2021 and it started growing very quickly.”

He continued: ‘I don’t know if it was because people were taking so many quizzes during lockdown – or if people were just keen to get back to events – but there was definitely a new appetite for quizzes.

‘We did this Top Ten question every week and we decided it would be fun if we could have some celebrities ask the questions.

“Judi Dench was kind enough to become our very first Celebrity Reader, and once Judi says yes, most people will say yes.

“So from there it really took off. Now we are almost always fully booked three weeks in advance.’

The majority of The Barley Mow’s staff are actors and musicians who work part-time at the pub in addition to their main careers.

This means that all of the quiz’s celebrity guests come from employees who pool their contacts – and call on all the A-listers they’ve met or worked with.

Attendees so far include Hollywood stars like Michael Sheen, Hugh Bonneville and Will Ferrell, as well as famous TV faces like Graham Norton, Dermot O’Leary and Chris McCausland.

But it’s not all about big names for their quiz events – as Will says, a big part of it is creating a ‘feeling of community’.

He said: “The sense of community we have deliberately cultivated is something that pubs in London don’t always have.

‘Even though we have a W1 postcode, we have created this special, rare thing that people in London are desperate for.

‘People are loyal to us and many of our quiz teams come regularly. It gives a feeling of security and recognition, and it gives comfort.’
