Hollywood’s ‘Ozempic face’ crisis: Plastic surgeons reveal the celebs suffering from gauntness ‘because of weight-loss drug’
Smooth, plump cheeks. Wrinkle-free forehead.
These are the characteristics we’ve become accustomed to among celebrities obsessed with Botox and fillers.
But a new look is emerging in Hollywood: sunken eyes, thin cheeks and sagging skin.
Experts say this is due to the rising popularity of weight loss drugs. The side effect is called ‘Ozempic face’.
Famous lothario Scott Disick scared fans last month with his dramatic new look, but a number of other celebrities appear to be suffering from the same problem.
Scott Disick shocked audiences when he looked thin and malnourished – prompting some to wonder if he was abusing the weight-loss drug Ozempic
Jessica Simpson (photo in 2020, left and 2023) also had an Ozempic face, the surgeons said, because she had more sunken cheeks than before
Fans have shared their concerns over whether Sharon (pictured in 2020) is ‘sick’ following her third weight loss after taking the drug Ozempic, which is used to treat diabetes
Dr. Smita Ramanadham, a plastic surgeon in New Jersey, told DailyMail.com: ‘Ozempic facial features are essentially the same features we see when patients have rapid or regular weight loss.
‘We see a loss of volume in the face, and as we lose fat in the face we see signs such as the cheeks becoming more sunken, sagging skin and a general hollowing out of the facial features.
“Sometimes it can actually make a person look older because the fat on our cheeks gives us a more youthful appearance.”
Dr. Sue Decotiis, a weight loss expert who has prescribed Ozempic to thousands of patients, added that weight loss looks more dramatic in people with longer faces because of the way the skin is stretched.
More than nine million prescriptions for Ozempic were written in the last three months of 2022, as the drug takes the US by storm.
John Goodman, 71, is an example of an “Ozempic face,” or how the face changes after rapid weight loss, experts said, because of the deflated appearance of his cheeks and his sunken eyes. They also indicated more wrinkles on his face
Robbie Williams revealed he lost 25 pounds with Ozempic (left in 2013 and right last year). Surgeons said the more pronounced lines on his face and the hollowing of the cheeks were signs of an Ozempic face. One expert said he now looked more like an ‘old man’
The surgeons – including Dr. Nicholas Jones, a plastic surgeon in Georgia – were shown photos of fifteen celebrities who had undergone recent weight-loss transformations, and said that more than half – mostly men – had an Ozempic face.
That was harder to tell for women, they said, because they traditionally used fillers more often and covered up blemishes with makeup.
At the top of the list was John Goodman, who, according to the experts, had drastically less facial volume and, as a result, had more loose skin that had formed wrinkles.
Dr. Ramanadham said, “He hasn’t been in the news anywhere on Ozempic, so I don’t know if that’s it…
“But even with just weight loss, you see more lines, more wrinkles and more deflating in his face as he loses weight, compared to when he was heavier and his face was fuller.
“These changes are very typical of overall weight loss, regardless of whether weight-loss medications have been used.”
John, 71, has lost 200 pounds in more than a decade, which he credits to eating smaller portions, walking his dogs daily and, at one point, cutting sugar and alcohol from his diet.
He hasn’t said he was taking Ozempic, although photos surfaced this month of him at a New York City airport looking particularly thin.
Scott Disick – who is rumored to be on Ozempic – was also on the list, with doctors pointing to the sunken areas under his eyes.
But surgeons said it’s unusual for weight-loss drugs to cause such a dramatic change in his appearance, suggesting other factors may be at play even if he used the drugs aggressively.
They also included Robbie Williams among the Ozempic-faced celebrities, with Dr Ramanadham says, “You see a hollow under the eyes and cheeks and more wrinkles appear due to loss of volume. With Robbie you see the immediate results of weight loss.’
Jesse Plemons is pictured above in 2022 and again in 2024. In both images he is at the Oscars. The star has attributed his weight loss to intermittent fasting
Liam Payne, pictured above in 2015 and 2023, plastic surgeons said the chiselled facial features on his face suggested he had undergone buccal fat removal, or removal of the fat pad in his cheeks, rather than having had an Ozempic face
Dr. Decotiis added, “He looks like a completely different person! He has a longer face, which means he certainly looks very drawn from the weight loss.”
The “Angels” star, 50, revealed his 25-pound weight loss last year, saying it was due to “something like Ozempic” and calling the weight loss a “Christmas miracle.”
Among the women, both doctors said Sharon Osbourne, also 71, was the most dramatic example of the Ozempic face — after the star revealed she lost 42 pounds on Ozempic and then “couldn’t stop losing the weight.”
“Her eyes seem more sunken, her cheeks are more hollow,” said Dr. Ramanadham. ‘There is also a significant loss of facial volume and associated increased wrinkles.’
Both also pointed out the nasolabial fold – or line that runs from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth – which they said had become clearer.
Of Jessica, Dr. Jones said, “If you look at the earlier photo, her face is much fuller and has more volume.
“But when I look at the later photo, her eyes and her face are more sunken, her cheeks are not as full. Her face actually looks a bit emaciated, as if she’s been starving.’
Jessica never said she was taking a weight loss drug, but previously revealed between 2019 and 2020 that she had lost 100 pounds.
The surgeons were also asked to look at Liam Payne, 30, to see if his diminished facial features were due to Ozempic.
But they said this was more closely related to buccal fat removal surgery, or when the fat pad is removed from the cheeks. His sculpted facial features suggested that he had not experienced significant weight loss.
Dr. Jones said: ‘If someone loses a lot of weight, they can develop a lot of loose skin. But this is not the case with Liam.’
