Hollow Knight: Silksong has been delayed

Hollow Knight: Silksongthe highly anticipated sequel to the beloved 2017 indie hit Hollow Knight, won’t make it into the first half of 2023 (unsurprising at this point, as we’re well into May). Matthew Griffin from developer Team Cherry made the announcement on Twittersimply saying that “development is still ongoing”, and declined to give an expected release window for the game.

In fact, Silk song never had an official release date. But it appeared in trailer form during Microsoft’s June 2022 showcase, which claimed to only feature games coming out in the next 12 months. (Silk song is hardly the only victim from that showcase, which was also on display Star field, Forza Motorsportand several other games delayed to late 2023 and beyond.)

“We planned to release in the first half of 2023, but development is still ongoing,” Griffin wrote. “We’re excited about how the game is developing and it’s gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game the best it can be. Expect more details from us as we get closer to release.”

Griffin’s message effectively rules out any pretense Silk song in the Xbox and Summer Game Fest showcases filling the gap left by this year’s canceled E3. Team Cherry’s refusal to commit to a release date for Silk song is likely just a sensible precaution, though the wording of the tweet doesn’t suggest the game is coming out any time soon. A late 2023 release or a slip into 2024 seems likely.

Silk song was first announced in 2019, but Team Cherry’s years of silence on its development, with the exception of that 2022 trailer, has turned desperate fans’ vain hopes for news from every platform holder showcase into something of a meme. Originally conceived as an extension to the original Hollow Knight featuring that game’s antagonist/ally Hornet as the main character, Silk song has grown into a full-fledged sequel – and, it seems, rather ambitious.

When it appears, Hollow Knight: Silksong will be released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X. It will be available on Game Pass from day one.
