His fine form has resulted in links with multiple clubs, including United, who raved about him over the summer before the move stalled.

Despite current speculation over Gakpo’s future, he says his focus is on the World Cup, but is not ruling out a departure from PSV in January.

‘At the moment I am working with the Dutch team. I’ll see what happens in the winter. Everything is possible in football,” said Gakpo.

The 23-year-old has failed to rule out a January departure but says his full focus is on the World Cup

“I am now focused on the World Cup. It’s always nice to hear, but I’m just focusing here and doing my best. I’m not ashamed of the rumours. But it’s a team sport, it’s not about one person.

“I prefer it to be about the team. It’s nice things that people write, but I’m not really into that. I’m not surprised.

‘I know what I can do, but it’s always a challenge to reach your highest level, you can. I’m not there yet, I can still improve a lot.’

Man United were enthusiastic about Gakpo in the summer, but the move ultimately failed to materialize

Gakpo was close to moving to Leeds in the summer before opting out on deadline day.

Southampton was another Premier League side keen on him, but a move to the south coast also failed to materialize.

Gakpo will return to action with the Netherlands on Tuesday when they face Qatar in their final group match. With a win against the hosts, Van Gaal’s team will advance to the last 16.
