‘My mother was red-cheeked in her coffin when she died’: Holland boss Louis van Gaal enjoys yet another BIZARRE press conference as he responds to a compliment about his tan at the World Cup in Qatar by claiming it was in his’ genes’

Louis van Gaal’s tan was praised ahead of the Netherlands’ final World Cup group stage match – and he responded with one of the weirdest lines to come out of a football press conference.

The Netherlands will play hosts Qatar on Tuesday, knowing that while they are not ready, their chances are high as it depends on an unusual run of results.

The former Man United boss has become known for some strange statements during his time, and earlier in the tournament he was caught making a cheeky request to his wife Truus, as previously reported by Sportsmail.

In the pre-match presser for the Netherlands’ match against Qatar, the 71-year-old was praised by a reporter for his tan.

Van Gaal replied: ‘My mother was flushed in her coffin when she died. It’s a matter of genes.’

In the same press conference, he also said that the Dutch have ‘a chance’ of winning the World Cup, having extended their unbeaten run with a win and a draw so far in the competition.

He said: “We’ve been unbeaten for 17 games and if you look at the goal difference I think we deserve some respect.”

The boss is in his third period in the Holland hotseat and has previously said that this will be his last World Cup.

Commenting on his aim to win the match, he said, “I hope this isn’t pressure at all.

‘Cause I think you always have to set the goal, the goal you’re here for, and then you can work your way towards that goal. If you don’t identify that goal and say “the last 16 or the quarter-finals is enough” then that’s not the right way to do things.

“I never said that we are going to become world champions, I said that we can become it, that we have a chance and the players have also become convinced of that.”

Senegal and Ecuador will play each other in the other Group A match, which will coincide with Qatar’s final match of the tournament, which will take place at Al Bayt Stadium.

There are no injuries for Holland, although Memphis Depay could start after two substitute appearances in their opening games.
