HIMSSCast: Providers very optimistic about the future of AI in healthcare, according to a new study

According to a new survey from the Berkeley Research Group, 75% of healthcare professionals expect widespread implementation of AI within three years. That’s a pretty positive response for a technology that’s very new to healthcare.

Additionally, 87% of service provider respondents are confident in their organization’s ability to comply with AI regulations, the survey found. Once again an unusually large response to artificial intelligence.

In this week’s podcast, James McHugh, managing director at Berkeley Research Group, talks in-depth about the results of this new research into AI in healthcare, offering advice to CIOs and other healthcare IT leaders along the way.

Discussion points:

  • Nearly 60% of providers surveyed offer some form of internal training and education on AI, and 55% of them establish AI-specific guidelines on proper use.

  • While the healthcare industry has necessarily taken steps to self-regulate, more needs to be done.

  • Only 37% of provider respondents indicate that their organization is reviewing or planning to review regulatory guidelines to ensure proper AI implementation.

  • Six in ten provider respondents consider current AI regulations and guidelines to provide adequate safeguards for the use of AI. Where does this optimism come from?

  • 87% of respondents are confident in their organization’s ability to comply with regulations, while reporting that HIPAA violations, accuracy, security data privacy and ethical standards remain paramount.

  • 75% of healthcare professionals expect widespread implementation of AI within three years.
