HIMSSCast: As security threats increase, intelligence sharing is essential

If the cybersecurity industry seems a little busier than usual lately, don’t imagine it. In mid-2024, the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights reported that nearly 400 data breaches had been reported to its portal through June 30 — the highest six-month total since OCR began tracking the number 14 years ago.

We recently spoke with Errol Weiss, Chief Security Officer of Health-ISAC, about that dubious milestone—and how healthcare organizations can better position themselves to avoid being among those statistics.

The Health Information Sharing and Analysis Center is a global organization designed to help healthcare stakeholders coordinate, collaborate, and share information and best practices about cybersecurity threats.

Weiss discussed the critical value of sharing such information as healthcare organizations look to strengthen their defenses and risk mitigation strategies in an era of increasing cybersecurity complexity.
