Days after the Himachal Pradesh Cabinet approved extending Dr YS Parmar Vidyarthi Rin Yojna benefits to overseas education, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Sunday said a detailed standard operating procedure (SOP) would be issued soon in this regard.

The Cabinet on Friday decided to expand the scope of the scheme. Under this scheme, education loans of up to Rs 20 lakh will be provided at a rate of one percent to eligible students who wish to pursue vocational training. Foreign educational institutions will also be expanded.

On Sunday, Sukhu said the initiative will benefit students who wish to pursue further education at an overseas institution so that financial constraints do not hamper their educational aspirations.

He added that the Ministry of Education will soon issue a detailed SOP in this regard.

The state government launched the loan scheme last year to support the eligible meritorious students from economically weaker sections. Students from families with annual income below Rs 4 lakh are eligible for the loan.

“Our government is committed to providing quality education to all youths. With the launch of this programme, no eligible student in the state will be deprived of higher or vocational education due to financial constraints.

“This decision reflects the state government’s unwavering commitment to make quality education accessible to all, irrespective of economic background. The government has allocated Rs 200 crore to support such students under this scheme,” the CM said.

Sukhu further said that a complaints officer will be appointed to address student concerns to ensure the effectiveness of the programme implementation.
