  • More than 15,000 pounds of mixed meat may have been contaminated with bones
  • Customers are urged not to eat sausages with an expiration date of November 11, 2023
  • At least one person suffered an oral injury as a result

Hillshire Brands has issued an urgent recall of its smoked sausage products after bone fragments caused injuries to at least one person.

The company has been urging customers not to eat their ready-to-eat sausages with an expiration date of November 11, 2023, as the company is recalling nearly 16,000 pounds of mixed meat.

The recall was announced by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) after customers complained about finding bone fragments in the sausages.

It’s unclear how production of the sausages became contaminated with bones, which led to one report of a person with an oral injury, according to the FDA.

The recall is only directed at the brand’s 14oz packs of ready-to-eat sausages titled, “Hillshire Farm Smokes Sausage Made With Pork, Turkey and Beef.”

Food safety officials told people to look for the contaminated batch produced on June 14, 2023, which is marked with codes in order of location number, line number and production time: minutes, seconds.

The stamp ‘EST. 756A 20 19:00:00 to 21:59:59 and EST. 756A 21 19:00:00 to 21:59:59′ and use date ’11 November 23’.

Officials have not confirmed how many complaints have been filed, which have been sent to both the FDA and FSIS.

The FSIS added that it was concerned that unwitting customers could have the bone-filled sausages in their freezers for some time as they urged people to check the products.

Customers can return the sausages to the place of purchase.

The recall comes just days after frozen vegetables packaged by Twin City Foods were recalled due to fears the products could be contaminated with bacteria.

The FDA warned that customers who consume any of the company’s 22 frozen vegetable products are at risk of serious health problems, including miscarriages in pregnant women.

Food safety officials said the company is “voluntarily recalling a limited quantity” of the products because there is “a possibility that these products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.”

It’s the same bacteria that recently killed three people in Washington after they ate milkshakes made using a contaminated ice cream maker in a burger joint.
