Hilary Swank shares how she chased a robber down a freeway in Paris 10 years ago after he smashed the window of her taxi and grabbed her purse

Hilary Swank has opened up about her rough past during the press tour for her new film Ordinary Angels.

The Million Dollar Baby Oscar winner, 49, and her co-star Alan Ritchson, 41, sat down with the ladies of The View to promote their faith-based film.

The actors both shared their experiences of being robbed, with Hilary stepping in after the Reacher star revealed he and his wife had witnessed a robbery and he ran after the man to catch him.

The Boys Don’t Cry actress – who looked stunning in a red dress at the premiere of her new film – recounted a time in 2013 when she was living in Paris and a man smashed the window of the taxi she was in and killed her. bag and ran along the highway in a suburb of the French capital.

“I was living in Paris, I was robbed and I chased the man too,” the actress explained. ‘I thought, “I’m going to grab my bag, I just need my passport. Give me my passport!”‘

In January 2013 Sky News reported that three men jumped Hilary’s taxi while it was stuck in traffic on the highway in the suburb of Saint-Denis, just north of Paris.

They smashed the backseat window and took the actress’s designer handbag. The Alaska Daily star explained that she was able to chase the thieves because of the traffic.

Sky News noted at the time that the Paris area was often targeted by thieves who preyed on drivers and passengers because of the ease with which they could be robbed in gridlocked traffic.

Ritchson stepped in to add to Swank’s story, saying, “The craziest thing is that it didn’t look like anyone — she didn’t say, ‘I think that guy’s doing something wrong.’ She was in the car and the man smashed her window. And chased him.”

Swank wore high-heeled boots as she chased the thief, causing co-host Whoopi Goldberg to laugh and say, “Do you know how long it takes to get a passport?”

The PS I Love You star said the stolen passport was ‘nice and thick and I had added pages of all the places I had ever travelled. I thought: this is so meaningful.’

Swank did not reveal whether or not she recovered her purse and passport when the segment of the show ended before she could complete the story, but she promised to tell “the rest of the story” the next time she appeared on The View .

In another interview this week, the I Am Mother actress revealed to the Wall Street Journal that before she got her big break, she and her mother slept in their Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme on quiet residential streets.

“I was living in Paris, I was robbed and I chased the man too,” the actress explained. ‘I thought, “I’m going to grab my bag, I just need my passport. Give me my passport!”‘

Swank’s mother, a former dancer, left Bellingham, Washington with her daughter after divorcing her husband.

Once her mother Judy found a job as a secretary, they were able to get out of their car and into a bedroom they rented from a single mother.

And today, the star doesn’t call Los Angeles home, but she and her husband Philip Schneider — whom she married in 2018 — have homes in Colorado and Washington.

The couple are raising their 10-month-old twins Aya and Ohm, whose names the mother-of-two just revealed on Valentine’s Day.

Ordinary Angels is inspired by the “incredible true story of a hairdresser who single-handedly rallies an entire community to help a widowed father save the life of his critically ill young daughter,” who needs a liver transplant to to survive.

The film is based on the 2023 memoir of the same name by Sharon Stevens Evans, who portrays Swank in the film.

It tells the gripping story of Kentuckian Ed Schmitt, played by Ritchson, a widow who lost his wife to a respiratory illness.

He has five and three-year-old daughters who both have life-threatening liver disease.

Swank’s character saw a newspaper article in the Louisville Courier Journal about Schmitt’s daughters, who lost their mother to a respiratory disease.

The family’s plight inspired Sharon to intervene and try to help the family in any way she could.

Ordinary Angels opens in theaters on February 23.
