Hilary Duff nails casual chic as she enjoys holiday festivities with husband Matthew Koma and their daughters

Hilary Duff kicked off the holidays with a trip to the mall with her husband Matthew Koma, 36, and their daughters Banks, five, and Mae, two.

The Younger alum, 36, held Banks' hand as they made their way through the seasonally decorated mall in Los Angeles.

Hilary – who took her children to see Santa last week – wore a long black coat over an oversized tracksuit, while her husband wore shorts and a hoodie.

Banks cut a fashionable figure in a silver jacket, white shirt and jeans, while Mae showed off her girly side in a pink Santa print dress and a pink sweater over pink leggings.

The youngest of the family carried a helium-filled balloon.

Earlier this week, the How I Met Your Father star sat down with her Procession to talk about the holidays and specific traditions her family has.

β€œI just love the holidays,” she said, adding that her favorite day is Christmas Eve.

'It's a bit more nuanced. We all cook together. We have some friends visiting. The kids each get to open a present from mom and dad, and it's just a little more manageable – and I think that's really great, because I'm a Libra.”

And the family of Lizzie McGuire alumnus is totally into the popular Elf on a Shelf trend, but their way of doing it is a little extra.

β€œWe're fully invested in it,” Hilary said. β€œIt's just so much fun and the kids love it.”

β€œWe have three elves,” she revealed. 'We have Jimmy, Jane and Jemma. (It's) a big commitment!'

The busy mom gets some of her elf posting ideas from Instagram, but she also gets a little help from a friend of hers.

β€œI have a friend on the East Coast who will send me pictures of Elf on a Shelf and I want to log that one, log that β€” thank you for saving Christmas for my kids,” she joked.

And while her children's wish lists are being written and sent to Santa, Hilary isn't done making hers just yet.

But she does have an idea of what she wants under the tree on Christmas morning.

β€œI haven't started making my list yet, but it's usually something shiny,” she said.

'I work very hard all year round. I do and do and do for the family, so I usually want something that comes in a shiny box.”
