An NFL photographer was unexpectedly hit in the head by a football on Sunday during the Christmas Eve game between the New York Jets and the Washington Commanders.

The goal came early in the second quarter as the Jets looked to extend a 17-0 lead.

Quarterback Trevor Siemian stood around the 15-yard line as the Jets looked for a touchdown. With the commanders having good coverage, Siemian still found his target, Tyler Conklin, in the end zone.

However, Washington's Cody Barton did just enough to disrupt the pass. This caused the ball to fly past their hands and hit a photographer in the head.

The photographer, seen wearing an orange cap, seemed too focused on his shot and didn't notice the ball until it was too late.

Two other cameramen, one to his left and the other to his right, saw the trajectory of the pig skin and reacted accordingly.

Despite falling on his back with a hand above his head after the blow, both the photographer and his equipment appeared to be fine.

“You see my guy in the orange hat take one off the head,” NFL analyst Adam Archuleta said on the air. “I stayed there for that shot.”

“It looks like he's doing well before we get a hazard pay for that,” CBS announcer Spero Dedes responded. “It's a dangerous place on an NFL field sometimes.”

After the incident, Jets kicker Greg Zuerlein completed a field goal to give New York a 20–0 lead.

Both the Jets and Commanders entered the game with losing records: 5-9 and 4-10, respectively.

The Jets are coming off a 30-0 loss to the Dolphins as the third-seeded team in the AFC East.

Meanwhile, the Commanders entered the game on a five-game skid, with their last losing effort coming against the Rams. Washington currently sits at the bottom of the NFC East.
