David Beckham almost outdid Lionel Messi for all the wrong reasons during his Inter Miami reveal on Sunday night when he nearly fell as he walked onto the pitch.
The football star ceremony was postponed due to a torrential downpour and thunderstorms in Miami and light rain was still falling when it was decided to go ahead with the plan for the evening.
And as Beckham, one of Miami’s co-owners, walked onto the field via a footbridge, he was seen to lose his footing for a split second as the world’s cameras filmed him.
Fortunately, the 48-year-old managed to stay upright despite wobbling for a split second and when he regained his balance, he stood still with his arms outstretched in relief.
It didn’t go unnoticed by Jorge Mas – who co-owns Miami with Beckham – when the owner jokingly waved his arms in front of him and pretended to slide over it too.

Beckham didn’t let his moment of panic upset him for the rest of what was a great night for him and his Inter Miami team.
After finally making it to the podium in one piece, he delivered an emotional speech reflecting on his journey as Miami’s owner before welcoming arguably the greatest footballer ever to his team, Messi.
“10 years ago I started my journey to build a new MLS team,” he told a stadium packed with adoring fans.
“I said then that my dream was to bring the best players in the world to Florida and the great city of Miami. Players who shared our ambition to grow football in this country, who would inspire the next generation and help build a legacy in this sport.
“Please forgive me for feeling a little emotional tonight. It really is a dream come true to welcome Lionel Messi to Inter Miami.
“Leo, we are so proud that you have chosen this club for the next phase of your career. Welcome to the family.
“We are also so proud to be joined by the one and only Sergio Busquets. One of the most complete midfielders of his generation.
“We are building a special club here at Inter Miami, one that cares about the community it serves. Our fans make Inter Miami unique. Together we create unforgettable memories.
“Like all of you, I can’t wait to see Leo take the field in our colours. Ladies and gentlemen, this is where the next chapter of our story begins.’
Beckham will be able to see Messi in action on Friday when Inter Miami play Cruz Azul in the newly formed Leagues Cup.
